One of the first movies to reach the trifecta of having a great story, relatability by sending a social message was English Vinglish Shashi Godbole, one of the most iconic Sridevi characters, reminded us so much of our own mothers. A movie that made us laugh and left us with tears, English Vinglish celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. To celebrate this momentous occasion, writer and director Gauri Shinde hosted a panel discussion with the film’s cast and crew on Monday.
10 years of English Vinglish: Boney Kapoor cries at the memory of Sridevi
Sridevi’s husband Boney Kapoor had attended the event. The producer spoke about the film, his late wife and her contribution to the film. He was visibly moved and in tears he remembered her work. A few days ago he shared a post on his Instagram account, writing: “10 years of English Vinglish 🙂 To come back after a sabbatical of 15 years of movies, with a timeless, magical performance that touched everyone’s heart – is something alone Sri could. This film will always remain special.”
Writer and director Gauri Shinde said, “Making English Vinglish was one of the best things that ever happened to me. Getting the chance to work with Sridevi, who was on a sabbatical at the time, was a miracle in itself. Her presence was most prominent, even outside the camera lens. Not having her here today is still the saddest thing. But being here with the rest of the cast and crew, talking about our memories of her and the movie felt amazing.”
The panel discussion ended with the announcement that Sridevi’s iconic saris will be auctioned and that the proceeds will go to education for young women.” The announcement was followed by the screening of the film.
Guests like Producer of the film R Balki, Producer and Director Gauri Shinde, Boney Kapoor, Khushi Kapoor, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Saiyami Kher and Cast and crew of the film – Navika Kotia, Shivansh Kotia, Dir. Gauri Shinde, lyricist Swanand Kirkire, Rajeev Ravindranathan, cinematography Laxman Utekar and lyricist-screenwriter Kausar Munir.
