2023 Independent Spirit Awards Nominations Announced

Film Independent has revealed the television nominations for the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards, which this year have become gender-neutral, just like its film colleagues. As revealed online Tuesday morning by Asia Kate Dillon (“Billions“)the announcement included a winner: Apple TV+’s “Pachinko” won Best New Ensemble Cast, featuring Soji Arai, Jin Ha, Inji Jeong, Minha Kim, Kaho Minami, Lee Minho, Steve Sanghyun Noh, Anna Sawai, Jimmi Simpson and Yuh-Jung Youn.

Overall, the top nominees were ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” FX’s “The Bear,” Apple TV+’s “Severance,” and HBO Max’s “Severance,” all tied with three nods apiece.

“As the television landscape continues to evolve and independent artists expand the idea of ​​how stories can be told, we are proud to change with them,” said Josh Welsh, President of Film Independent. “With our new categories and gender-neutral actor awards, we hope to better reflect the diversity of incredible work created by these talented performers.”

With the categories becoming gender-neutral, the award for Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series was expanded to 10 nominees and an award for Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series was added to honor performances outside of lead roles. .

The Independent Spirits’ film portion was announced on November 22, with “Everything Everywhere All At Once” leading the pack.

The television component of the Spirit Awards was first introduced for the 2021 ceremony and honors freshman shows only. In addition, unlike the film competition, there is no budget cap on productions. According to Film Independent, “This year, the Spirit Awards Television nominating committees selected the nominees using the following guidelines: unique vision, original and provocative subject matter, economy of means”.

The 38th Film Independent Spirit Awards will take place on Saturday, March 4, 2023 in person on the beach in Santa Monica. With no television release this year, The Independent Spirits will instead air internationally across multiple online and digital platforms.
