2023 PGA Awards Documentary Nominees

National Geographic Films has topped the 2023 Documentary Film nominees for the upcoming 34th Producers Guild Awards. The studio landed three of the seven spots with Sara Dosa’s “Fire of Love,” Matthew Heineman’s “Retrograde” and Alex Pritz’s “The Territory.”

In addition to the Nat Geo trio, other nominees included HBO’s “All That Breathes,” Netflix’s “Descendant,” CNN and Warner Bros.’ “Navalny,” and Showtime’s “Nothing Compares.” All seven are in discussion for Oscar recognition this year.

The Producers Guild Awards recognize excellence in film and television productions, as well as the most notable names in the industry who are shaping the profession of producer.

The PGA docs nominees haven’t had the best translation record for the Oscars, which differs from the narrative feature category. However, this strongly correlates to its appearance on the shortlist of 15 Oscar doc films, which began voting today. Last year, seven of the eight PGA nominees made the shortlist, and four were ultimately nominated by the Academy – “Ascension”, “Flee”, “Writing with Fire” and the winner “Summer of Soul (…Or, when the revolution couldn’t be televised).

As for winners, over the past decade four PGA winners have become Oscar winners – ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ (2012) ‘Amy’ (2015), ‘OJ: Made in America (2016), “My Octopus Teacher” (2020) and the aforementioned “Summer of Soul”.

The nominees for sports, children’s and short-form TV programs will be announced on Friday, December 16. For motion pictures, animated features, TV series and specials, and TV/streaming movies, they will be revealed on Thursday, January 16. 12. Winners will be announced on Saturday February 25, 2023.

The Producers Guild of America represents more than 8,500 producers. It is a non-profit trade organization that represents, protects and promotes the interests of all members of the film, television and new media production team.
