Tony 2023 Predictions:
Best Direction of a Play
Marcel Spears and Billy Eugene Jones in “Fat Ham” on Broadway.
Joan Marcus
Weekly Commentary: Directors with a strong hand are always likely to attract nomination attention, which is why Jamie Lloyd is set to be nominated for his relentlessly minimalist direction of ‘A Doll’s House.’ The puppet-stuffed spectacle of “Life of Pi” looks just as likely to land a name for Max Webster, while Saheem Ali (“Fat Ham”) commands attention with the fiery emotional release of his staging of “Fat Ham”. LaTanya Richardson Jackson is poised for recognition for her star-studded production of “The Piano Lesson,” and Kenny Leon has won acclaim for his beautifully performed direction of “Topdog/Underdog.”
Three other directors wait in the wings, including Anne Kauffman (“The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window”), Justin Martin (“Prima Facie”) and Daniel Sullivan (“Summer, 1976”). ).

Tony 2023 Predictions:
Best Direction of a Musical

Scaled
Weekly Commentary: Among the musicals, Michael Arden’s “Parade” was perhaps the biggest reveal of the season with a fresh and relevant look at an influential musical. A trio of Tony regulars, Casey Nicholaw (“Some Like It Hot”), Jack O’Brien (“Shucked”) and Susan Stroman (“New York, New York”), may well earn names for their typically work polished, while Jessica Stone likely gets a nod for delivering the quiet emotional punch of “Kimberly Akimbo.”
Other contenders include Thomas Kail for his big, atmospheric “Sweeney Todd,” Lear deBessonet for his enjoyable and popular “Into the Woods,” and Bartlett Sher for his elegantly staged production of “Camelot.”
