The Fed crossover unpacks the psyche of a serial killer

The “The Rookie: Fed” crossover episode with ABC flagship “The Rookie” sees the team digging deep into a serial killer’s motivations, including the suspect’s abusive relationship with his father and the nature of his gruesome murders. There are clues. On this week’s episode of “Fades,” which you can preview in the exclusive clip above, Simone (Nissie Nash), Laura (Britt Robertson) and their former colleague Mark Atlas (guest star, “The Flight Attendant” Deniz Ekadeniz) Travel to Tucson to rescue the suspect’s next victim.

In the minute-long clip, Laura and her apprentice Brendan (Kevin Zegers) investigate a water chamber that claimed the life of one of the murderer’s victims. They identify intricate metalwork on the container, leading the former – a professional profiler – to conclude that the serial killer is meticulous and intent on his crimes.

On their way to catch the suspect, Laura and Mark, also a profiler, come closer as they debate the murderer’s motive. The episode, titled “To Die For”, also stars Felix Solis and James Lesur.

“The Rookie: Fed” brings Nash back to the role of Simone, the oldest rookie in the FBI, just like Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan in the LAPD training program in Season 1 of “The Rookie.” The original series first introduced Simone, who developed a friendship with Nolan in the backdoor pilot of Season 4 of the spinoff “The Rookie”. Co-creator, co-showrunner and executive producer Alexi Hawley told TheWrap in an interview that the spinoff was intentionally set in Los Angeles to allow for a further universe-sharing storyline.

“There was a version of a spinoff that was another cop show set in another city, ‘The Rookie: Austin’ or ‘The Rookie: New York’ or whatever. For us, it was exciting to create something that could work together but stand alone [from the original],” They said.

The fourth episode of “The Rookie: Fades” on ABC premieres Tuesday, October 18 at 10 p.m. ET. Watch episodes on-demand and on Hulu the day after it airs.
