Karthi’s Sardar hit the screen today with some decent expectations as the movie’s trailer promised an intriguing movie. Let’s see how the movie is…

intro

Sardar begins in 1988 and introduces us to a spy who has apparently become a villain. Later, the film returns to the present and we are introduced to his son Vijay Prakash (Karthi), a publicity-hungry cop. Meanwhile, an activist Samira (Laila), who campaigns against the privatization of water bodies, mysteriously dies. So Vijay Prakash tries to track down the killers. What happens next and what happened to the spy is the crux.

What’s hot?

Karthi delivers an extraordinary performance in both roles and he stands as a major asset of the film. He rocked both as a son overshadowed by his father’s actions, and as a resilient spy who would stop at nothing to protect the integrity of his nation. The supporting characters are all functional. He did a fantastic job in this movie and his performance.

Rashi Khanna doesn’t have much going on but she has a very good screen presence. Her glamorous avatar is a major attraction for the masses. Laila is okay in her role. Rajisha Vijayan and Chunky Pandey performed well.

Cinematography is good and visuals are decent. Editor did a very average job and he should have been more effective in the first half. Dialogues are quite good. Music director lifts the film up with heavy background music in the second half. Mithran’s direction is captivating. There are some good twists and unexpected sequences in the movie and he handled it in a great way.

Sardar is an efficiently made spy movie with good suspense here and there. Despite the thin story, the film manages to captivate us until the end. The importance of preserving our water resources and preventing them from falling into private hands is shown in a poignant way. As in this director’s films, we get an information overload that also helps with the detailing in the story.

What not?

The film never speaks to our hearts as much as our brains. And for an action movie, the stunts are largely distracting and too long.

verdict:

Overall, Sardar is an intense spy drama with some exciting scenes. Karthi’s outrageous performance, unique set-up, thumping background music filled with captivating images make this film a good viewing piece this weekend.
