How to Understand Streaming Success Without Subscriber Numbers

The Q3 streaming arms race pits both tech giants against each other (and other streamers), except that neither reveals their subs.

Apple and Amazon’s quarterly financial results are turning out to be a guessing game for Wall Street analysts trying to shape who is winning the streaming subscription war. No tech giant would absolutely hesitate to tell the public how many paying customers they have.

It has almost become a parody of the old Mad Magazine comic strip “Spy vs. Spy”, which pits two opponents against each other with enough equal firepower to dodge each other. Amazon is in danger given that it has 153 million Prime subscribers, but it won’t break down how many tap into video on average. Apple doesn’t break down the financial results of its streaming platform either, although its music streaming service sees about 100 million subscribers annually.
