‘s next action movie No one helmer Ilya Naishuller will feature two big names with Idris Elba and John Cena attached to the lead roles. Last year Elba and Cena appeared together in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and their interactions made for some of the film’s most entertaining moments. More of their on-screen chemistry will be on display for heads of state, a new action-comedy film in the works from Amazon Studios starring Naishuller in the director’s chair. Per THRPeter Safran, who was recently named co-CEO and co-chairman of DC Studios alongside Gunn, is co-producing the film with John Rickard of The Safran Company.
The screenplay for the film was originally written by Harrison Query (My wife and I bought a ranch) with revisions by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec (the upcoming from Netflix) Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley). In the film, Elba and Cena will play unlikely partners who are “sitting over their heads in a high-stakes situation”. No further details have been released about the film’s plot yet, but it is said to have an atmosphere that feels like “Air Force One meets midnight run.”
Besides having popular names in the lead roles, heads of state will also intrigue with Naishuller in the director’s chair. Last year, the director released the popular action movie No onewhich was written by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad and featured You better call Saul star Bob Odenkirk as an unlikely vigilante. Since then, there has been talk of that movie getting a sequel. Naishuller also directed the unique action film Hardcore Henry which was shown from a first-person perspective of the main character.
John Cena and Idris Elba to Reunite for Heads of State
Although they will be playing different characters, the film looks promising with Idris Elba and John Cena in the lead. Their scenes together in The Suicide Squad were highly entertaining, and Elba has spoken about the dynamism he had working with Cena on the film. Maybe some of that magic will be recreated for heads of state.
“It was a really great experience to discover. If I’m honest, it was one of the things that developed,” said Elba, via the Illuminati. “When you read the script, you see a kind of natural rivalry between John and I and James [Gunn] and the natural dynamism of the whole team. John and I were really drawn to this natural kind of d*ck-swing competition that was just great fun. So for us it was really fun and James would really push Idris and John to make Peacemaker and Bloodsport really appear on screen. I loved every minute of it.”
Of their two characters, Cena added, “They have similar skills and I think that really kicks off the fuel for the one-manship. They really want to fight for that Alpha position, when the other superheroes don’t necessarily have to compete as much because they have definable characteristics, and I think that little journey between Bloodsport and Peacemaker that runs throughout the movie really makes for some good comedic moments and some wonderful one-man art.
