Filmmaker Abhiroop Basu, however, deviates from this mass opinion, calling the film “poorly made” and “regressive” because of its content.

Filmmaker Abhiroop Basu criticizes the popular Kannada film Kantara starring Rishab Shetty; calls it ‘regressive’

Filmmaker Abhiroop Basu, who writes and directs short films, criticized Kantara during an interview with ETimes. He was quoted as saying: “I think it’s a mockery of one’s intelligence. Badly made, regressive, loud, full of tropes, no real character to root for, so-called plot twists seem unfair and serve only as gimmicks, the redemption arc of the main character is laughable and by the time the movie reaches its much-discussed climax, I’m not really interested anymore.”

He added: “But I don’t think it should be really shocking for a film that forces you to believe in ‘divine intervention’ that is sufficiently deserving, especially at a time when as a country you are trying hard to maintain its scientific relevance. to prove it with a mythological character, so basically it’s all part of it.”

For the uninitiated, the film tells of a mythological folklore in which a deal between a landlord and villagers goes awry. It also touches on some traditional practices such as Buta Kola (animist ritual dance) and Kambala (buffalo breed) which are quite popular in inland Karnataka and their culture.

Talk about Kantara, the film is also directed by Rishab Shetty, who plays the lead role in the film. Also starring Achyuth Kumar, Pramod Shetty and Sapthami Gowda, the film was initially released in Kannada only. However, due to its popularity, it was later released in other languages including Malayalam and Hindi. The Kannada version hit the big screens on September 30.
