South Korean BTS member Jin took the stage as a special guest during Coldplay’s Music Of The Spheres world tour in Buenos Aires to perform his new single ‘the astronaut’ on October 28 in Argentina. The concert took place at River Plate Stadium and a live cinema broadcast of the concert was available worldwide. “The Astronaut,” co-written by Jin and Coldplay, it was released on the same day.

Before Jin arrived on stage, Chris introduced him to the stage and told how the relationship between Coldplay and BTS came about through sheer love of music. Chris admitted to having prejudices about working with the Korean band before, saying that BTS’s music was different, but there was no reason not to work with them. The groups collaborated on Music Of The Spheres track’my universe’ in 2021. Addressing the massive crowd, Chris said, “A few years ago I felt like we had to play a certain kind of music all the time, we had to be pigeonholed — and I had that feeling about my life too. And I met some good people and read some good books and met some great teachers and they seemed to be happy And the thing that made them happy was that you didn’t fear what you don’t know and people you don’t know don’t understand yet – you just ask.”

He added: “And one way that has really blessed my life – and our lives as a band – is that about two years ago someone suggested that we work with a Korean boy band. [I was] full of judgment, which is often my first reaction, because I am human. But after a while I thought, ‘Why am I afraid of these, just because they are different?’ And so we went down this road and we did a song together called ‘My Universe’. And it turned out to be one of the most fun and fulfilling relationships we have as a band, and it taught us so much about… Embrace the other instead of fearing it.”

About how Jin approached him six months ago to work on a new song before he was required to enlist in the military, Chris went on to say, “And so, about six months ago, one of their members called me and he said, ‘I’m in December had to leave the band [to join] the military in Korea, because that’s where the rules are. And he said, ‘I need a song that will say goodbye to everyone for a while, and tell them I love them… And so I said, ‘Okay, let’s do a song together.’ And instead of worrying about it, I feel so excited about it, so grateful for this relationship we have with BTS. And then this song came along, and I thought, ‘This is one of our best songs – let’s give it to this gentleman.’”

While Jin performed with Coldplay, the stadium sang along. In the middle of the song he ran to Chris Martin who was waiting for him with open arms. While holding him, Chris kissed his forehead. At the end of the performance, Jin said, “And I love you ARMY, all of you”, bowing to the audience before leaving the stage.

‘The Astronaut’ marks the second collaboration between BTS and Coldplay after Coldplay X BTS”my universe’ released in September last year. According to the latest update, the song sold a total of 700,954 copies on Friday, making the singer-songwriter only the third solo artist in history to surpass 700,000 sales with an album on its first day of release.

This is Jin’s first solo project since BTS announced in June 2022 that they were ceasing their group activities for the time being to focus on their solo efforts. On October 17, the group’s agency announced that all seven members will join the military for their mandatory service and be back together by 2025. Before that time one can expect new music from all members.
