Will Ferrell’s role in next year’s Barbie movie has been confirmed by the man himself, who also wanted critical acclaim for the script.
Will Ferrell is currently seeing great success with Ryan Reynolds in the Apple TV+ movie Wittybut one of his next projects will be that of Greta Gerwig Barbie movie. During a conversation with the Wall Street JournalFerrell has spoken about his role for the first time and also offered some insight into the satirical homage the script delivers.
Since the announcement, the Barbie film has caused a lot of headaches about exactly how the film will be pitched. With Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling playing the title character and her ever-faithful Ken, respectively, as well as several other A-list stars playing other variations of the pair, what happens in the movie? Ferrell has now pulled back the curtain just enough to clarify some of the earlier comments about it Barbie not be the movie people expect. He said:
“In my humble opinion it is the ultimate example of high art and low art. It’s a loving tribute to the brand and at the same time it couldn’t be more satirical – just a great comment about the male patriarchy and women in society and why Barbiehas been criticized and yet every little girl still wants to play with it Barbie. Boy, when I read it, I thought, “This is fantastic.”
Ferrell continued to mention his character in the film, previously seen in set photos seemingly being haunted Barbie and Ken on roller skates. While there are rumors that Ferrell would play the CEO of Mattel Toys, he loses his Barbie in the real world. It seems that all of that is completely true. He added:
“I get to play Mattel’s CEO and be that guy who’s just insensitive but weird and then doesn’t spoil anything, but… Anyway, that’s what turns me on.”

If there’s one thing that can’t be predicted, it’s how audiences react to new movie releases that don’t yet have an invested following, such as those from the MCU or DCU franchises. With many big movies coming out next year, will Barbie standing her ground against people like Indiana Jones 5, The Miracles and Oppenheimer? Everyone involved in the movie certainly seems to think so.
While Ferrell has been quick to praise the script, he’s not the first to be wildly optimistic about the film. Simu Liu has previously spoken about his initial reaction to reading the script, going so far as to say it’s one of the “best scripts” he’s ever been given. He said:
“It’s one of the best scripts I’ve ever read. I think it will surprise a lot of people because I think a lot of people get cynical when they see Mattel or when they see Barbie. The first thought I had after reading the script was how did they get Mattel to sign this, because this isn’t the kind of movie that corporate executives sign up for.
Everything will be revealed in due time, but for now those who are intrigued will be very much looking forward to the first trailer for Barbie soon.
