Whoopi Goldberg paused during her opening remarks on Wednesday morning’s episode of “The View,” in which she addressed the latest mass shooting in America, which happened Tuesday night in Chesapeake, Virginia. Why? Because she was distracted by co-host Joy Behr loudly popping Tic-Tacs.
To close the show, Whoopi said they were actively monitoring the situation in Virginia, in which a Walmart employee opened fire on his colleagues, killing six people and injuring four others, before he turns the gun on himself. The hosts were critical, with Whoopi lamenting that it was “a terrible way” to start the show, and encouraging viewers to truly embrace the purpose of Thanksgiving.
Whoopi said, “Please don’t forget the people who aren’t going to be so lucky, and try to be really grateful, because tomorrow is never promised.” “And it’s, you know, it’s the Thanksgiving show and we want to get up and roll with it, but it’s so hard to start these shows sometimes because we’re sometimes — what’s you eating?”
The sudden tangent came as a pop that could be heard over a mic, followed by a surprisingly loud crunching, which startled Whoopi.
Feeling embarrassed, Joy Behar admitted that she had been eating a Tic-Tac, assuring her co-workers that she had not actually started eating the Thanksgiving treat placed on their desk.
When Behar marvels at the fact that Whoopi caught her saying she has “super sonic hearing”, the entire table corrects her.
“No! That was—they heard it over there!” Whoopi said, pointing to the audience. Meanwhile, Sarah Haines and Alyssa Farrah Griffin both agreed that it was “too loud”. Only Sunny Hostin did not hear the crunch, prompting Whoopi to joke that She only hears what she wants to hear.
From there, the women recovered — with Behar’s apologies for being predictably loud — and jumped into their planned hot topics (which, ironically, involved asking what the rudest treats are at the Thanksgiving table). .
