Shazam! Actor Asher Angel anticipates crossover movies in the DCU

The DCU’s new leadership has left Asher Angel hopeful about the potential crossovers we’ll see with Shazam and other DC superheroes.

New plans are being formed for the next decade with the DCU’s creative future, and at least this has one Shazam! star is feeling excited. Released in 2019, Shazam! follows Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a young boy with the ability to transform into the titular superhero (as played by Zachary Levi). As the film was a huge success for Warner Bros., a sequel was put in development and Angel will reprise his role for the upcoming sequel. Shazam! Anger of the Gods.

A standalone movie Shazam! didn’t have much to tie itself to the DCU. There was a special surprise appearance from Superman, although his face was not shown as it was not Henry Cavill in the suit. However, things may be different in the future Shazam! producer Peter Safran takes charge of the DCU along with James Gunn. Angel thinks the change could lead to some crossover movies with other DCU characters, and this is something the actor can’t wait for. As he shared in an interview with Josh Wilding (via The direct):

“Man I feel really good with Peter and James coming on board. I mean they’re obviously super talented and super passionate and I love how they’re making this 10 year plan. And I think the DC Universe is will be… there are a lot of special movies coming up and I’m just ready for Shazam to be integrated with some of the other superhero movies.”

The Rock has promised a Black Adam Crossover

Shazam vs. Black Adam: Will Zachary Levi be able to fight The Rock in Shazam 3?

A natural way to go would be for Shazam to get involved in the new story established with Black Adam and Superman. At one point, there were tentative plans for Black Adam to have a cameo appearance Shazam! before The Rock pushed for the anti-hero’s first debut in his own solo film. That Black Adam has arrived, with Henry Cavill’s Superman no less, it’s time for a crossover. And it’s even something that Dwayne Johnson himself has promised fans will see.

“It was just a mosh of, ‘Just put them both together, because they’re both connected,'” Johnson said in an earlier interview about why the timing wasn’t right for the characters to meet yet. “So then I said, ‘You can’t do it like that, we have to respect Shazam and his origin story, that has to be his own movie. Respect Black Adam, this has to be his own movie. Build them up’, and then you can do this to do.'”

Shazam! Anger of the Gods will hit theaters March 17, 2023.
