Michael Gandolfini joins the MCU with Daredevil: Born Again Role

After recording Tony Soprano in The Many Saints of Newarkactor Michael Gandolfini will make its mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. deadline reports that Gandolfini has been tapped for a major role in Daredevil: Born Again, an upcoming series in the works at Disney+. It was previously confirmed that Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio will also star in the series, reprising their respective roles as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk. Matt Corman and Chris Ord are writing and producing the series.


It is reportedly “possible” that Gandolfini will play an “ambitious man from Staten Island named Liam”, but details about his character in Daredevil: Born Again are not confirmed. This also marks the MCU debut for Gandolfini, who is still on the rise after his acclaimed performance as young Tony Soprano in the Sopranos prequel. The Many Saints of Newark; Gandolfini’s late father, James Gandolfini, originally played Tony. Gandolfini previously appeared in other films such as Ocean 8, Cherryand The independentand he’s also been cast in Ari Aster’s upcoming movie Disappointment Blvd.

On the small screen, Gandolfini also recently appeared in the Paramount+ series The offerdescribing the making of The godfather. That followed a recurring role on HBO’s The deuce. The actor is also attached to the upcoming Apple TV+ series Extrapolations alongside Meryl Streep, Kit Harington, Daveed Diggs and David Schwimmer. Gandolfini is just happy to be working and has made it clear that he’s not at all afraid of being typecast in gangster roles.

“I just love my job. So when I get to do it, I love doing it,” Gandolfini told TooFab. “I mean I think casting directors are really talented at what they do and I fit in too. I’m obviously very different physically and emotionally from my dad, so wherever I am, man. I’m happy to be a part of something to make. “

The new Daredevil series brings back at least two stars from the original Daredevil series previously streamed on Netflix. It remains unclear if it will bring back other stars from that show, as the “Born Again” portion of the title suggests a new beginning for Daredevil. But Cox has said he hopes other familiar faces join him for the new show, although as of now, Gandolfini is the only other name besides Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio reportedly cast.

“It’s been an absolute joy working with everyone on all those shows on Netflix,” Cox recently told Deadline. “They were the beating heart of all those shows. I would be honored and excited to work with one of them again.”

Admitting that even he is still not sure whether the new series will be an actual continuation of the previous one DaredevilCox added, “There are so many great stories to tell. There are stories to tell again. That wouldn’t be incompatible with what they’re doing in the comic book universe. Often a new writer and artist will take over a book and they’ll be right from the start. So maybe we’re going to do that, but I really don’t know. I’m just really happy to be invited to the party.”
