Romantic comedies have slowed down in recent years after an explosive era of hits in the 2000s and early 2010s. IndieWireActress Kate Hudson claimed on a recent YouTube show that a lack of a good story in recent rom-coms is responsible for the hybrid movie genre falling out of favor:
“[Romantic comedies need] a really good story let’s start with that… I think sometimes people think rom-coms are all about the meet cute. A great rom-com is about meeting love, discovering love, falling in love, love falling apart, and then how to get back together. That’s a very traditional rom-com structure.
The “meet cute” refers to the trope in rom-coms where the pair meet in awkward or unusual circumstances. This happens in the beginning and is often teased in trailers for the movie. While it’s a pivotal segment of rom-coms, Hudson claims more parts are needed to give the viewer “a fuzzy feeling” throughout the film.
“The ones we love are two movie stars in a love story. They shine and they’re bright and it’s like wish fulfillment. It should make you feel fuzzy, and then they stay with you forever. They’re the most classic. ”
Hudson also teased that she might learn rom-coms in the future:
“I feel like I’m really winning at this description of a rom-com! That’s the class I’m going to be [teaching] at NYU film school when I’m 75. I’ll be the professor of rom-coms.
Kate Hudson enjoys working with Matthew McConaughey
According to Kate Hudson, the story is not the only ingredient in a good romantic comedy, but also the chemistry, something she had with Matthew McConaughey:
“But just because they’re supposed to feel bright doesn’t mean they have to look that bright. Again, I often think the genre gets a little watered down because they think they know. And then the chemistry. .. so I’m thankful it was me and Matthew [McConaughey] because he’s great.”
Kate Hudson starred opposite Matthew McConaughey in two classic rom-coms: How to lose a man in 10 days and fool gold, the latter of which was also an action-adventure film.
However, Kate Hudson isn’t just a rom-com actress. She has appeared in several movie genres including The Skeleton Key, a creepy horror in the Louisiana bayou, the political thriller The unwilling fundamentalist, and the crime drama The killer in me. Most recently she appeared in Glass Onion: A Mystery of the Bladesand as the title suggests, it’s a mystery film that adds to the variety of Hudson’s impressive filmography.
Her next movie is shrivel, a comedy written and directed by Michael Maren. Along with Kate Hudson, the cast includes Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. A release date for the film has not yet been announced.
