Gary Friedkin, ‘Happy Days’ actor, dies at age 70

Gary Friedkin, who appeared as Clarence the cook in “Happy Days” and the 1982 comedy “Young Doctors in Love,” died of complications from COVID-19 on Dec. 2, according to Youngstown, Ohio Tribune Chronicle,

The four-foot-tall actor, who was born in Youngstown on November 23, 1952, “passed away peacefully” at the hospice house with his brother Alan and sister-in-law Carol by his side.

“He labored for three and a half weeks in the medical intensive care unit at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital due to complications from COVID-19,” the online obituary said.

“Although Gary may have been small in stature, he was a giant among his family and friends. His legacy will live on as stories are told and repeated by all who loved him. “He was a gift to all who knew him as a wonderful son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, great-grandfather and friend. He is survived by his brother Alan; sister-in-law, Carol; nephews, Nathan and Aaron (Jonny) Friedkin; niece, Sarah (Lance) Polikov; great-nieces, Hayden and Jordan Polikov; and great-grandson, Sawyer Polikov.

A scholarship has been established in his name at YSU. Attention will be given to those with a disability or concentration in the performing arts. Memorial donations may be made to the Gary Friedkin Scholarship. YSU Foundation, 655 Vick Ave, Youngstown, OH 44502.

The Celebration of Life will be held in spring 2023.
