Bill Maher believes that the tribal mentality of hatred towards “the other” in this country is very likely what may have led to civil war.
“Everything they say can’t happen here, of course it can,” the comedian said on his “Club Random” podcast. He said, ‘They used to say that terrorism cannot happen here and then it happened here. We are not exempt. Americans, they think their s— don’t stink, and they think they somehow live in this gilded cage where the stuff that other countries tolerate, well, we’ll tolerate that too—and in Authoritarianism may also be involved.
On this week’s episode of “Club Random,” Maher invites evolutionary biologist and creationist critic Richard Dawkins to discuss science, Covid, vaccinations, and the like, but the conversation veers a bit and turns to the state of the country and social behavior. Took towards In this they
“There’s a lot of talk [a second civil war] And there are a lot of people for that,” Maher told Dawkins. “There [are] Many people who think that we are so divided and they hate the other side. The word both sides use: ‘against each other.’ But Maher said one thing they have in common is that it has become an ‘existential threat’, which he describes as ‘civil war’. Can imagine of course. as a part of it.
The Civil War of the 1860s was also known as the War Between the States, with fixed lines of battle between sides of each army invading the other’s territory. “If they captured Washington, they would win the war, and if we captured the Southern capitol, so would we,” as Maher put it. But nowadays the tension between “left” and “right” knows no bounds. This might lead some to think that a modern war would not be possible, but Maher said, it is still possible, but with blurred lines.
“We are all doing marbles together now. There are 4 million Trump voters in California, the bluest state in the country. So we can’t fight there, but can you fight within the armed forces, as in many countries? Of course you could. You can have factions. There are also factions in Trump’s police, the FBI,” he said. “This is what you find out when the S – hits the fans, and we’ve seen it play out in a number of other countries.”
