Oscars 2023 Predictions: Best Live Action Short Film
CATEGORY COMMENT: The big takeaway from the Oscars shortlist announcement was a full lineup that doesn’t feature any US titles. All but Tom Berkeley and Ross White’s “An Irish Goodbye” are not in English, which could be a plus for Oscar nominee voting which begins Jan. 12.
The increase in non-English titles should not be construed as a “bad thing” as we constantly encourage Academy members to seek out more non-traditional and international titles. However, this could point to another example of how increasing the number of international voters has had an incredible effect.
It could also point to the omissions of two music superstars – Taylor Swift (“All Too Well”) and Kendrick Lamar (“We Cry Together”) – being snubbed from the shortlist.
The most recognizable name in the discussion is four-time Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón, who produced Disney’s “The Pupil” by writer and director Alice Rohrwacher. Making stops at the Cannes, Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals, the film might have the most buzz to get it to the finish line.
The Criterion Channel made a major flex in the short film categories, notably with Dania Bdeir’s “Warsha,” the story of a Beirut crane operator living his secret passion.
They will be more fashionable to consider when people start looking at them during the holidays.
