Triangle of Sadness star Dolly De Leon is expected to win the Best Supporting Actress award

If Dolly De Leon wins the Best Supporting Actress award, she will make history as the first Filipino to win.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and the Academy Award predictions are starting to pour in. This year is hotly debated as to who will win the Best Supporting Actress category, including Angela Bassett, Jessie Buckley, Jamie Lee Curtis, Nina Hoss, Stephanie Hsu and Gabrielle Union, as well as Varietycurrent favorite pick, Dolly deLeon from Triangle of sadness.

According to Variety, De Leon is fast becoming a top contender in the Best Actress category. The official forecast reads:

There is momentum for Neon’s ‘Triangle of Sadness’, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. For her powerhouse role as restroom manager Abigail, the relatively unknown Dolly De Leon got a Golden Globe nod, which bodes well for her campaign. If she can sneak into the SAG lineup, the single mother of four would be well on her way to the Dolby Theater as a contestant. Plus, she’s one of the heartwarming stories of the season, not without making history as the first Filipino ever to be nominated. However, De Leon is not the only newcomer / stranger in the running.

Non-binary actors advocate for gender-neutral acting categories

Non-binary actor Emma Corrin recently spoke about the gendered acting categories at the Oscars and other awards shows. The actor argues that it’s time awards shows merged the Best Actor and Best Actress categories into a single, genderless category to better match actors’ identities and be more inclusive.

Corrin has impressed critics with her performance as Diana, Princess of Wales in The crown, won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for the role and was nominated for the Outstanding Lead Actress category at the Emmy Awards. But the recognition is bittersweet for the non-binary actor, who recently spoke out on the issue of gender-neutral award categories, saying:

I hope for a future where that happens. I don’t think the categories are inclusive enough right now. The point is that everyone can feel recognized and represented. It’s hard for me right now to justify in my head being non-binary and being nominated in female categories.

Now that the Grammy Awards have been gender-neutral for years, and the news that both the BAFTA and Academy Awards are considering a move to gender-neutral categories, Corrin’s desire for a more inclusive awards show is a real possibility. And if these changes are made to one category, they will be reflected across the board, including the Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor categories.
