Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar Snubbed From Live Action And Animated Shorts Oscar Contention

Sorry Swifties, the dream is dead. The Academy announced the shortlist for the Oscars’ live-action short film category, and neither Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well” nor musical superstar Kendrick Lamar’s “We Cry Together” made the cut. (Swift was shortlisted in the Original Song category for her track “Carolina” from “Where the Crawdads Sing.”)

Of the 200 films that qualified in the category, 15 will advance, including “Warsha,” the story of a Syrian migrant worker who operates a crane in Beirut, “An Irish Goodbye,” a film about two brothers and a wish list, and “The Red Suitcase”, which features the airport crisis of an Iranian teenager.

In animation, the Academy embraced a variety of short stories and tails, including animal-focused introductions “Save Ralph,” featuring a bunny employed as a product tester in a lab, “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse,” about an unlikely group of fellow travelers; and “An Ostrich Told Me The World Is Fake And I Think I Believe It,” a film whose title is self-explanatory.

81 films qualified in the Animated Short category this year, with 15 films advancing.

Members of the Animated Short and Feature Film Branch vote to determine the shortlist and ultimately the category nominees. For the Live Action Short Film, members of the Animated Short Films and Feature Films Branches, Directors, Producers and Writers take responsibility.

The Academy announced the shortlists for Live Action and Animated Short on Wednesday along with the shortlists for semifinalists in eight other categories.
