For “Emily in Paris” creator, writer and executive producer Darren Starr, the goal with the drama-filled finale was “to leave a lot of open questions about what’s next, for the audience and for us as writers as well.”
The “Sex and the City” producer continued, “Just wondering, ‘Okay, all these characters are left in some pretty strong situations that we want to think about for Season 4 as well as everyone’s dynamic. Wanna flip it little by little. And all their relationships with each other.'”
With Season 4 already on Netflix, and a writer’s room set to open in the new year, the star said Emily will once again return to her work, as she did in previous seasons. At the same time, the character – previously rigid and single-minded about his job – “has unexpectedly matured a lot.”
“I think she’s more comfortable living in Paris. She’s discovering who she is,” he said. “She’s really finding herself there and I think when she applies for a job She didn’t expect it. He never had the intention of making a life there, and I think now he really is.
As for what else viewers can expect from season 4: the new character additions of JVMA executive and Mindy’s old boarding school crush-cum-boyfriend Sophia and Nikolas (Paul Forman), not going anywhere soon, and the next Years will shake the dynamics. While the audience and Emily are aware of the intense infatuation shared by Camille and Sophia, it is unknown to Gabriel, and Starr said it would be “explosive” when it is revealed.
“We see a different side of Camille with Sofia and I love her and I love Melia, the actress who plays Sofia. She came in and did everything I hoped she would, and between them The chemistry is great, and I feel like we see a passionate side of Camille that we haven’t really seen with Gabriel,” said the star.
For Nikolas and Mindy (Ashley Park), the latter’s Eurovision success with Benoit (Kevin Dias), will test her sense of who she wants to be (and be with).
Starr said of the character’s introduction, “We wanted a character who actually spoke to Mindy before she arrived in Paris.” “It’s a side she feels very comfortable with, but it’s probably not her best self. Benoit represents Mindy’s artistic soul, and I think we’re definitely going to have a little conflict between those two men in Season 4 – not even romantically, but it forces Mindy to ask who he is, and what is important to him.
Another character who gets more of a spotlight this season is Philippa Leroy-Beaulieu’s Sylvie, whose startup marketing agency, relationships with romantic partners, and Emily’s “Devil Wears Prada”-esque mentorship take center stage.
“This season, we get to see her from the point of view of different characters. I think she’s very guarded around Emily. She’s been a little distrustful … she thought Emily had come in as an interloper, ”the star explained.
And despite their differences and different approaches to life in the workplace, both Sylvie and Emily share ambitious goals and a drive to succeed. In Season 4, Sylvie will be given more time and backstory with her husband.
