6 absurd anime that are almost too ridiculous to watch

The world of anime is a giant rabbit hole. Once you fall in, you fall deeper and deeper. Since there are all kinds of anime, there are some that can be a little weird. Sometimes a little too much. The biggest reason behind this is that all sorts of restrictions are thrown out the window, both in terms of plot and animation. So animators can use this freedom to bring any kind of imagination to life. Some can be pretty bizarre to say the least. Anime offers everything from skewed images to nonsensical stories, to psychedelic mind trips, to abstract conceptions of mental health. Here’s a list of absurd animations that are almost too ridiculous to watch.

6/6 Seko guys

Tokyo MX

The anime tells a story about Miki, a recent art school graduate who accepts a position as the manager of the Sekkou Boys, a brand new idol group. The real catch is that Sekkou Boys are four stone figures of Michelangelo’s Medici, St. Giorgio, Mars, and Hermes. Miki despises images to the core because she is terrible at painting them and was therefore made fun of at her art school. The concept of the show makes no sense at all. The images have no one; so they have to be dragged to their concerts. Despite not being able to move on their own or move their lips, strangely enough they can sing, and the audience is given no explanation for this.

The most absurd part of it all is that no one on the show seems to question why the statues are grouped together like idols, whether they are actually sentient, or even how they can talk. Everyone is so used to it like it’s quite normal. While Sekku guys is a satirical critique of the exploitation of young people by the idol industry, it sometimes becomes too ridiculous to keep watching because of the pointless storyline.

5/6 Prison School

Funimation

Hachimitsu Academy, a prestigious girls’ school, is being co-edited for the first time in its long history. The story mainly revolves around the five men, a fun-loving gang of perverts who find it hard to get along with women! These five interactions with women without women, the guys make a dangerous attempt to spy on many girls while they shower. A series of mishaps ultimately causes their plan to fail. Their actions are exposed in front of the rest of the school.

The menacing Underground Student Council steers the boys in jail for a whole month. However, the boys are in for a ride as their perverted behavior is only going to get worse as some rather unusual punishment comes their way from a brutally seductive VP of the council. Prison School is an absurd show in every form. Everything about it, from the premise and story to the animation and dialogue, just doesn’t make sense. Most of the time, the footage just gets too high an R rating to make sense of it. Girls are extremely sexualized; the punishments also feel borderline erotic, and the boys, despite being sexually harassed, are shown as victims, making Prison School utterly ridiculous to even watch.

4/6 Zombieland saga

In a world where people fangirl about BTS or Harry Styles, imagine people worshiping a pop group of zombies! Well, that’s exactly what this anime is about. The show revolves around Sakura Minamoto, who aspires to become a pop star. However, she unfortunately gets a reality check and dies in a horrible car accident. After ten years, she wakes up in a place called Saga Prefecture only to discover that she is a zombie with no memory of her past life. While still processing her death, she is introduced to Koutarou Tatsumi, who explains that he is the one who brought her back to life. He tells her that he also resurrected six more girls from different eras to create a zombie idol group that will help Saga’s economy. Zombieland saga is one of those anime that you might have a hard time explaining because of its weird plot that makes the viewers wonder how someone came up with such a concept.

3/6 Bell pepper

Bell pepper
Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan

The realm of dreams can be a phenomenal doorway to the psyche, revealing one’s deepest desires, hidden memories and deep aspirations. One company started making “DC Mini,” a tool that can dive into other people’s dreams. To use this technology to extensively explore patients’ minds and help treat their psychiatric problems, Atsuko Chiba and Kosaku Tokita began working non-stop to finish it off. However, there is a great responsibility associated with being able to access one’s innermost thoughts. If the technology falls into the wrong hands, it can be used for psychological terrorism, which can lead to the mental breakdown of the target. The story begins when Atsuko and Kosaku realize their technology has been stolen and the surrounding people are behaving strangely.

While the premise of the film is quite interesting, the visuals and the way the audience is taken on this journey of people’s dreams are ridiculous to say the least. There are people grinning as they jump off the roof, faces emerging from faces, inanimate objects marching in a parade, and people flying, individuals spinning miniature size, and this is just the tip of the iceberg of the images Bell pepperhas. If one would describe Bell pepper in a simple sense, it would be like the audience going on a bad acid trip.

This anime revolves around Souma Yukihira, who has a passion for cooking. Since he can remember, he has been working in the kitchen with his father. His dream is to one day outperform his father and take over the helm. However, things change when he learns that the restaurant where they work is closing. Instead of following his father, he enrolls in the renowned Tootsuki Culinary Academy. The school is known for its “Shokugeki”, which happens to be spicy culinary competitions between students to resolve disputes.

While the premise sounds innocent and something many might prefer to watch, it takes a strange turn from here. The show’s comedy is more raunchy and becomes pretty pointless. One of the most absurd things the show does happens when someone eats food prepared by the contestant. They begin to experience vulgar, erotic reactions to the food. People undress and their erogenous zones and skin are rolled up to show arousal. This is not true Shokugeki no Somastops; the characters also start talking in an orgasmic tone, which is why fans started calling this reaction “foodgasm.” Not something you would expect from a culinary show, making it absolutely absurd to watch.

1/6 Keijo!!!

Keijo!!!

The story mainly revolves around Nozomi Kaminashi, who enters the Keijo realm in hopes of providing a comfortable lifestyle for her impoverished family. Keijo is essentially this Competitive sports that follows a basic set of rules: number one and most importantly, it is for female participants only. Second, contestants must stand on circular platforms floating in a pool with the aim of making the opponents fall off using only their buttocks and breasts. This is one of those premises that makes the reader reread because they are completely baffled by what they have just witnessed. Like the premise, the match scenes are pretty insane to watch, as the audience feels like they can see the ghost of a 14-year-old boy come to life on screen.
