James Wan and Jason Blum provide updates on possible sequels

The producers talked about potentially crossing over with Freaky and Happy Death Day as well as following up on The Invisible Man.

Jason Blum and James Wan gave an update on several possible horror movie sequels they could make during a joint interview The Hollywood Reporter. With their two companies, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, they’ve been responsible for some of the best horror movies of the past decade. There were two Blumhouse hits freaky and Happy death day.

Both films were horror comedies directed by Christopher Landon and put a spin on a classic comedy trope. Kathryn Newton played the lead role freaky as Millie Kessler, a teenage girl who switched bodies with the Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn). Jessica Rothe played the lead role Happy death day as Tree Gelbman, a college student repeatedly killed in a time loop.

A few months ago, on the red carpet for Halloween ends, Blum, Newton and Rothe were photographed together, renewing hopes for a crossover movie. In the past, Rothe has been quite vocal about her willingness to participate in a Strange death day. Blum has indicated that the likelihood of the crossover happening has diminished, but has yet to rule it out completely.

Strange death day. I hate to say it, but you dream of freaky Dead Day are a little further away than they were a few months ago. So I wouldn’t have very high expectations, but I would also say anything is possible.”

Invisible woman

Elizabeth Banks directs and stars in The Invisible Woman for Universal

One artist Wan and Blum have both collaborated with was writer/director Leigh Whannell, whose most recent film was 2020’s The invisible man. In an adaptation of the HG Welles novel, a woman named Cecilia “Cee” Kass (Elisabeth Moss) comes to believe she is being stalked by her abusive ex, who has somehow made herself invisible. Despite being a financial and critical success, a sequel has yet to come, though the possibility has been mooted.

For example, in November 2019, it was reported that Elizabeth Banks would direct and star The Invisible woman, which was said to have been written by Erin Cressida Wilson and based on an idea by Banks. However, the project’s last update was in 2020, with Banks set to create Cocaine Bear instead. So what happened? Who is responsible for Invisible Woman not moving forward?

“Well, it’s a great question. (laughs.) I think we’re holding me mostly accountable, but hopefully if our dreams come true and our two companies start working together, maybe James will help me solve that problem,” Blum said.

“I’d like to,” Wan said.

During the same interview, Wan was asked if it was true that Universal already had a M3GAN continuation. The film, produced by both Wan and Blum, has yet to be released but has already caused quite a stir on the internet. Echoing Blum’s earlier statement about not putting the cart before the horse, Wan said he doesn’t like talking about sequels before the movie is out.

“But like all the movies I do, I’m always thinking about a bigger world. I’m not just thinking about that one story; I’m thinking about the bigger world. So if we’re lucky enough to tell other stories, pulling from the bigger world.”
