Elvis movie to see for free in 10 cities in honor of the king’s birthday

Elvis by Baz Luhrmann will be shown for free on Elvis Presley’s birthday in selected theaters.


Maybe you can catch Elvis free on the big screen as a special way to celebrate Elvis Presley’s birthday. The king would have turned 88 on January 8 if he were still with us today. Warner Bros. has chosen to honor the “Jailhouse Rock” singer through screening Elvis, the new biopic from acclaimed filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, free that day. The film will run in 10 different cities for one day only, each deadlinewhich will keep the buzz around the movie going for a while.


Confirmed cities that will feature Elvis on January 8 include Atlanta (AMC Phipps Plaza), Chicago (AMC River East), Dallas (AMC NorthPark), Kansas City, KS (AMC Town Center), Los Angeles (AMC Burbank), New York City (Loews 34th Street), San Francisco (AMC Metreon), Toronto (Cineplex Scotiabank), and Vancouver (Cineplex Odeon International Village). The film will also be shown at Graceland in Memphis. Each of these free showings starts at 5 p.m., except LA, which starts an hour earlier at 4 p.m. The Graceland screening also starts at 2pm

It has also been revealed that the film’s star, Austin Butler, will appear in a video introduction ahead of the special screening. As part of the King’s birthday celebrations, Butler will also be featured in Elvis’ Town Hall rebroadcast on SiriusXM January 6-8 on Elvis Radio. Also starring are Tom Hanks (Colonel Tom Parker), Olivia DeJonge (Priscilla Presley) and director Baz Luhrmann.

A new Elvis documentary about the movie is coming to HBO Max

Elvis had a great run in theaters, scoring high praise from critics, with many even calling for Butler to be nominated for an Oscar for his performance as the king. But for those who prefer to watch the film at home, Elvis also streams on HBO Max. And if you still want more content about the king after the movie ends, there’s more to come. Also on January 8, HBO Max will release a new 30-minute doc on the making of the biopic. It’s dubbed Just a Boy from Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen.

Baz Luhrmann directs Elvis from a screenplay co-written with Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce and Jeremy Doner. The film stars Austin Butler, Tom Hanks, Olivia DeJonge, Helen Thomson, Richard Roxburgh, David Wenham, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Luke Bracey.
