James Cameron apologizes for Titanic Oscar speech

Chris Wallace, in the latest episode of “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace,” the news anchor’s new chat show for HBO Max and CNN (via Mediaite), was joined by filmmaker James Cameron, whose new film “Avatar: The Way of Water” is currently breaking box office records. Wallace felt the need to bring up his Oscar acceptance speech for “Titanic”, where Cameron exclaimed “I’m king of the world!” And Cameron admitted that the moment was, in retrospect, “cringe-worthy,” but also explained where he was coming from: “I was trying to convey the joy and excitement that I had in that moment.” Feeling in the context of the film, and most of all a happy moment for the character.

Wallace dodged the question by acknowledging that, with 11 wins, “Titanic” is the winningest film in Oscar history (tied with “Ben-Hur” and “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”). He was inquiring about Cameron on March 23, 1998 at the Oscars, though, so it’s a bit surprising that he brought this up. But here we are. The most successful directors in history are laughing at a man who worked for Fox News for nearly 20 years.

“What I’ve learned is that if you win, you don’t quote your own movie,” Cameron explained. “Because it’s worth the trouble. It makes the impression that you don’t live by a narrow margin, but every single person sitting in the audience that night at the Kodak Theater saw and loved ‘Titanic.’ We’ll never know if we How many won, but this landslide absolutely could not have happened. I had my ups and downs for a whole 25 years after that, but you know, you live and you learn. I think arrogance or a big F Was interpreted as -you, I-said-you-so I didn’t have that in mind at all.

Cameron ended his remarks on a joke, quoting Sally Field’s infamous “I can’t deny the fact that you like me”. Now, you like me! acceptance speech (often misquoted as “You like me, you really like me!”) in 1985 when she won for “Place in the Heart”. “You have to be careful what you say in your acceptance speech. Me and Sally Field, we have a little self-help group on this,” Cameron said.

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is in theaters now. These are the best.
