Whoopi Goldberg calls for Maggie Smith to return in Sister Act 3

Whoopi Goldberg says she’s trying to get Maggie Smith back as Mother Superior to round out the cast for Sister Act 3.

If Whoopi Goldberg gets her way, she will reunite with Maggie Smith in Sister Act 3. At the first two sister law movies, Smith memorably appeared in the role of Mother Superior opposite Goldberg’s Deloris Van Cartier, aka Sister Mary Clarence. A third installment is in the works, with Goldberg and other original cast members set to return, but there’s no indication Smith will be involved at this point.

That’s something Goldberg wants to change. Per PeopleGoldberg appeared on the British talk show Loose Women and revealed how she’s waiting to get Smith on board before moving forward with production. She looked straight into the camera and made a public plea for Smith to join her in the threequel, adding that she will do everything she can to make the performance happen.

“I want to let Maggie Smith know that I’m taking on the role of Mother Superior for you because I can’t do it with anyone but you,” Goldberg said. “So if you want me to come over here and shoot it down and do what we need to do, we’ll do what you want us to do. But we don’t want to do it without you, Maggie.’

It is not unrealistic that the 88-year-old Smith appears in the film. She is still active and has recently resumed her Downton Abbey role last year Downton Abbey: A New Era. Smith is also attached to the upcoming movies The Wonder Club and A German life. Looks like there’s a cameo in it Sister Act 3 will depend entirely on how Smith feels about revisiting that role at this stage of her career, 30 years after she parted ways with that character.

Goldberg previously teased the return of Kathy Najimy, as well as some of the former child stars seen in the second film. In addition to returning cast members, Goldberg says he also wants to get no star Keke Palmer and Lizzo also on board for the sequel. Tyler Perry is producing the film with Goldberg and Tim Federle is directing.

“The script is being written and I’m the producer, not the director. We’ve brought on an incredible director [Tim Federle] and Whoopi is very excited,” Perry said of the movie in a THR interview. “I think this is exactly what the country needs. We need that feel-good moment in the movie where you say, “Oh my God, I left there singing.” That’s my hope.”

Sister Act 3 does not have a release date yet.
