The 84th birthday of one of the greatest actors of all time, Sanjeev Kumar, was celebrated on July 9 this year. This anniversary was extra special this year because on the same day his biography ‘Sanjeev Kumar: The Actor We All Loved’ was launched with great fanfare. Written by Reeta Ramamurthy Gupta and Sanjeev’s cousin Uday Jariwala, the book focuses on various aspects of the actor’s life and also episodes that took place after his passing.

Sanjeev Kumar died of a heart attack at the age of 47, on November 6, 1985. The actor had a heart condition and suffered four heart attacks, the fourth of which was the last and fatal. It happened suddenly while he was in his bathroom. The actor was extremely popular and was also much revered and respected in the industry. As a result, several movie personalities came to pay their last respects. Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha and Shammi Kapoor even held his remains while they were being carried to the crematorium. The crowd at his Bandra home stretched for a mile as fans tried to catch one last glimpse of their beloved actor.

At one point, the book contains the fragment of Jyoti Nikul Jariwala, Sanjeev Kumar’s sister-in-law, and how she ran things after his death. Her husband Nikul had died a year before Sanjeev Kumar. “With Nikul not around either, I felt abandoned and lonely,” she wrote, then said, “The first shock came soon enough. Our lawyer told me to pay Rs. 6 lakhs to Bhai’s (Sanjeev Kumar) will. to fulfill.”

Jyoti then explained that she started collecting the sum of Rs. 6 lakhs. At the time, producer Boney Kapoor was the first to step forward. He returned the Rs. 2 lakh he borrowed from the late actor to make his first production Hum Paancho (1981), which also featured the last actor. Jyoti reveals that Boney was the son of Surinder Kapoor, who was Shammi Kapoor’s assistant. Shammi and Sanjeev were close, which is why Sanjeev lent the money to Boney and also worked in his film.

Meanwhile, it was the turn of Indian actress Shammi and returned Rs. 50,000 she owed. The showman Raj Kapoor also returned some money he borrowed from Sanjeev Kumar.

In addition to these, there were many others to whom Sanjeev Kumar had given money. The list was given to Jyoti by Jamnadasji, the manager of Sanjeev Kumar. She wrote: “The list of debtors was mind-boggling; the amount was in crores! We appealed to the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (for recovery of the money), but not much came out. To tell you the truth We still haven’t got that money back.”

Towards the end, Jyoti stressed the need for education for women so that they can sail through such difficult times. She also thanked Subhash Sanas, the close friend of Sanjeev Kumar, for her help in times of need.
