Lately, many remakes, action thrillers, comedies or historical dramas have been released in theaters and also on OTT platforms. And there are only a few movies about social causes. While Bollywood has been trying to revive the industry, OTT has picked up some interesting topics including Chhatriwali.

What is it about?

Chhatriwali follows the life of a simple girl next door Sania Dhingra (Rakul Preet) from Karnal. She has a degree in chemistry and a very good one. But the lack of job opportunities demotivates her. She tutors children in her area as she goes from one interview to the next trying to find a decent job. A chance meeting with Ratan Lamba (Satish Kaushik) changes things for her. Impressed by her knowledge of chemistry, he offers her a job in his company as head of quality control. The catch is the product. Lamba owns a condom factory Cando Condoms in Karnal. After fighting her initial views, she eventually decides to join the company for the hefty pay that comes with it. How she sees the importance of what she does, changes the mindset of her husband Rishi Kalra (Sumeet Vyas) who doesn’t want to use condoms because he feels like ‘raincoat pehenke baarish mein bheegne ka kya mazaa’ or her brother in law makes law who is a biology professor to give up his ideas about sex education and do justice with his education about the reproductive system forms the rest of the story. Along the way, she can also positively influence students and women in her city, making her cause bigger and more impactful.

What’s hot?

Rakul Preet Singh carries the film on her shoulder. She plays the girl next door, the kind of role she’s played in her short career and is a joy to watch. The casting is done perfectly and the setting blends in with the storyline. There’s serious acting in this film about an important subject that needs to be brought to light again and again.

What not?

In the past few years, two more films have appeared about safe sex, contraception and the use of condoms. One is the helmet of Aparshakti Khurrana, the other is Janhit Mein Jaari of Nushrratt Bharuccha. While the former dealt with the subject in a fun and quirky way, the latter impressively exposed a grim reality of the situation. Chhatriwali falls short of both. The movie just touches on the issues without delving deeper or stirring up emotions. The lack of this limits it to the problem of one family rather than making it a pertinent, universal problem. The storyline is also very similar to Janhit Mein Jaari, but that could have been overlooked if the treatment had the same impact. Because topics like this need to be told on a regular basis.

BL verdict: A film about an important subject like this deserves attention. However, it could have made a better effort to talk to its TG and highlight the importance of having a conversation about this taboo topic. Given the perfect casting, important subject matter and serious performances, we’re going for 2.5 stars.
