Ryan Reynolds has questioned the idea of Free Guy 2 continuing after questioning why everything has to have a sequel.
The Ryan Reynolds movie Free guy was one of the first major theatrical releases during the Covid pandemic. While many other studios were sending their movies to streaming platforms, Reynolds was determined to do just that Free guy was supposed to play in theaters, and it was a gamble that paid off, with the film ending the year as the 11th highest-grossing film of 2021 with a worldwide box office of over $330 million.
Naturally, the strong box office for the time, backed by a 94% viewership rating and a huge streaming performance, raised the demand for a sequel. On view this weekend at the Comedy festival Just For Laughs in the UK, Reynolds was asked if the sequel was indeed on the way. As reported by Varietywhile the actor didn’t directly answer yes or no, his opinions on the “requirement” of any major movie to have a sequel left free man 2 very doubtful. He said
“There is the possibility of doing a sequel to ‘Free Guy,’ which would be nice. I would like it very much. But also nice, does everything fucking have to be a sequel? Don’t know. Sometimes it’s OK to just make a movie and kick it and then everyone goes home. So you know, there’s a little bit of a push and pull there, resisting the urge to just immediately say, ‘Ohh, if you do a follow-up, the first one will be validated.’ No, the first film validates the first and then you can leave it at that. So I don’t know, we’re still talking about it.”
While many fans would love to see Reynolds return as Guy for another level of meta-video game fun, the actor’s comments about whether a sequel is needed are very similar to those made by director Shawn Levy back in December. At the time, Levy said of a potential sequel:
“It is still under development. I don’t know if it’s in the cards, but it’s still in development. It’s something Disney and Fox really want. I really try not to make sequels that don’t deserve to be. And that’s why I didn’t move forward with the Real Steel sequel, because I didn’t feel like we had a second movie that could match or surpass the first. I hold Free Guy to that same standard. We still hear ideas, develop ideas, expound ideas. But I’d say in the time that’s passed since Free Guy came out, the love for that movie has become more and more apparent to Ryan and me, anecdotally, on sidewalks, in the press. So we’re not going to mess with something good unless we can make something great.”
Levy and Reynolds prepare to start filming Deadpool3but will they get back together for another round of Free guy is something that we will have to wait a little longer to find out.
