While the “Blonde” star is in the highest demand for Sunday’s awards talent, sentiment about her is mixed, a new analysis shows.
As we saw in the Best Actor category, it looks like another close race between the leading women vying for the Best Actress award, at least when it comes to who has the public’s attention.
So far this year, Ana de Armas, nominated for her role as Marilyn Monroe in “Blonde,” leads the field with nearly 38 times the average demand for talent, according to data from Parrot Analytics, which factors in consumer research, streaming, downloads and social networks, among other commitments.
But while at first glance De Armas seems to have the upper hand in the competition for the Academy Award for Best Actress, dig deeper into the data and the story becomes more complicated.
Michelle Yeoh of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is very close to De Armas with an average demand 30.8 times higher, well ahead of third-place Cate Blanchett, who starred in “Tár”.
De Armas has been in the highest demand among the nominees for most of the year. She and Yeoh saw dramatic increases in demand after the Golden Globes on January 10 and after the Oscar nominations were announced on January 24.
However, Yeoh clearly gained momentum after his historic win at the SAG Awards go to the oscars Her euphoric SAG acceptance speech put her at the center of the conversation for days and put demand for her on an upward trajectory, more than tripling from the day before her SAG win to last Sunday. A late increase like this may have proved useful in winning over Academy members who were undecided until the close of voting on Tuesday.
Another area where Yeoh may have an edge over the competition is the positive sentiment the public has towards her, the most positive sentiment for any Best Actress nominee this year. While de Armas was in greater demand, she was also a more divisive actress and the attention she drew was not as positive.
Notably, Andrea Riseborough was the only one of the nominees to have net negative sentiment. The actress sparked a bit of controversy with her nomination for her role in “To Leslie” after it appeared there was a coordinated campaign by A-list actors to tip the scales in her favor, even as other frontrunners like Viola Davis failed. secure a nomination.
Looking at the ranking of Best Actress nominees by sentiment may point to Yeoh’s fiercest competition in this category, the ever-formidable Cate Blanchett. Blanchett, a two-time Oscar winner, received critical acclaim for her role as a famous conductor in “Tár.” At least in this sense, the public and critics share very positive opinions about Blanchett. Will that be enough to propel her to a third Oscar or will Yeoh’s momentum carry her across the finish line? We’ll find out on Sunday night.
