True stories strike a chord. That is why many filmmakers take inspiration for films from real life events. From the murder case of Jessica Lal to the Uri attacks, we’ve seen many real life incidents find their place in the cinema. Yet another heartbreaking story of a mother, based on true events, is here. Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway starring Rani Mukerji is a story of a mother who will stop at nothing to gain custody of her children who have been taken away by the Norwegian Child Welfare Service. What’s hot?

A story like this needs a power like that of Rani Mukerji. Her performance in the movie makes us realize why we miss her so much on the big screen. She has effortlessly carried the character of Mrs. Chatterjee and she will make you feel every emotion of every scene. Of course there are highs and lows, but overall Rani Mukerji has managed to deliver a performance that will leave you moved for days. There is a perfect rhythm to how the emotions flow. She is aggressive at first, but in recent years there is a shyness in her character that shows up after being so emotionally drained by the battle. But she holds on to hope and is ready to knock on any door to get back to her children. Anirban Bhattacharya plays the role of Rani Mukerji’s husband and his character is such that it makes you furious. His performance manages to get the reaction out of the audience, so it’s a job well done. The narration of the story is smooth and the script is clear. There are a few scenes that will literally make your heart ache, while there are a few scenes that will leave you with praise. Neena Gupta plays a very small but powerful role in the film. Jim Sarbh plays a pivotal role as a lawyer and he does it well. Amit Trivedi’s music is subtle and captures the atmosphere of the film beautifully.

What not?

Many may find it difficult to stay involved with the film as a few dialogues are in Bengali. The story focuses on Mrs. Chatterjee’s struggle, but there are many parallel sequences that are left open. What will happen with the divorce? What is the backstory of the domestic violence case and more. There are a few loose threads that could have been avoided. And given that the story is based on true events, it comes across as a one sided story and makes you think what if.
