Oscars 2023: The Variety Awards Circuit Podcast Recaps the Highs and Lows

On Sunday, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” seemed like everything, everywhere, all at once. The film, of course, topped the 95th Academy Awards with seven wins, including Best Picture. Virtually every star (except Stephanie Hsu – hey Daniels, can you spare one of your SIX Oscars and share one with her??) received wins, on what was truly a historic night.

And a sentimental. Like this week’s opening clips Variety Awards Circuit Podcast illustrious, family was on the minds of this year’s winners. Listen to our Mega Roundtable edition, in which Clayton Davis, Jenelle Riley, Jazz Tangcay and myself (that’s me, Michael Schneider) recount the show and dissect the winners – from Jimmy Kimmel’s excellent monologue to how each category took place:

Big wins like Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Brendan Fraser and Michelle Yeoh brought many tears – of course, on stage, but also in the audience. (I was alone in my SXSW Austin hotel room, bawling as I watched Ke win. Honestly, it was a ridiculously ugly scream, as I ran for the box of tissues from my JW Marriott bathroom.)

Funny, I should mention SXSW, because its unlikely march to big Oscar wins began at SXSW in 2022, when the movie first hit the public. And from there, the story became a fairy tale.

In the meantime, what was the quality of this Oscar ceremony? Host Jimmy Kimmel works hard, along with his staff, to put together a well-tuned monologue that was forever changing until air time. (Check out my behind-the-scenes chat with executive producer Molly McNearney and alternate Walt Disney TV boss Rob Mills here.) Kimmel now pretty much has an open invitation to return next year, and I hope he takes it. . Put him alongside Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg as Oscar hosts Mt. Rushmore.

So it’s all over now – except for the part where Clayton and I spend our Variety Oscar office pool money. Yes, you heard right. Clayton and I are tied for the pool. I won it last year. Clayton had won it the previous year. It’s not faked, but we manage to piss off our colleagues.

The Awards Circuit podcast will be taking a few weeks off as we recover from the Oscars and prepare for a crazy Emmys season. But for now, do you still want more from this year’s Oscars? Here is a summary of our stories from the night:
