In 2005, the Motorola Razr in metallic bright pink was the most popular phone. Everyone was excited about T9 texting and the economy was booming. The second episode of Star Warsthe fourth Harry Potter movie, and Christopher Nolan’s first episode Batman trilogy were among the top films of the year. But it was the performance How I met your mother that determined the year. Starting multi-talent Neil Patrick Harris, American pie alum Alyson Hannigan, comedian Jason Segel, and sitcom newcomers Josh Radnor and Colbie Smulders, the show’s premise was bound to be a crowd pleaser.
A detailed account of how Ted (Radnor) met his wife, the show was new. Every previous sitcom focused on family dynamics or the events leading up to people getting married. Essentially, no show had offered a reflection in the way How I met your mother make an indecent proposal. While it was initially as unique as the show’s premise, it left a sour taste for fans. After nine seasons, Ted had ruined every relationship he had because no woman could ever live up to Robin (Smulders). But the day he realized this was the day Robin finally gave in to her feelings for Ted.
Epic love stories
Marshall and Lily. Teddy and Tracy. Robin and Barney. Each character’s epic love story is unique and perfectly executed throughout How I met your mother. Marshall and Lily are the series’ long-term couple. They met in college and have been together the longest of any couple. But shortly before their wedding, Lily accepts an internship in San Francisco on the assumption that she has failed to fulfill her younger self’s dreams. Despite her cold feet, Lily returns when she realizes the life she wanted was with Marshall.
The premise of the show, of course, is Ted meeting Tracy (Made for loveby Cristin Milioti). He spent years looking for the woman with the yellow umbrella, also called Tracy. Meeting at a wedding is straight out of a rom-com, but their love and acceptance for each other is that of soul mates.
Barney and Robin were a perfect couple again. Barney didn’t want labels or kids, just like Robin. They were more interested in professionalism than romance. In fact, Barney even told Robin they’d be a perfect match long before they took the plunge. Although they divorced because Barney felt inadequate in their marriage, he regretted not being able to keep their marriage alive.
The twist of the first season
During the show, Ted tells his two children how he met their mother. His children comment and even ask questions for clarification from their father. Reactions to their father’s memories may mirror those of the public. Ted’s daughter (Lyndsy Fonseca) and son (David Henrie) continue throughout the nine seasons of How I met your mother. Despite jokes that Ted had been talking about for years, his kids aren’t necessarily getting older.
While Henrie and Fonseca’s contracts were rumored to be the reason for the twist in the season finale, the truth is that the twist was planned from day one. According to Cinema mix, the show’s creators originally planned for Robin and Ted to get together, and they left a big clue in Season 8. Ted had a creative “what if…?” episode, in which he traveled back in time to tell Tracy that they would meet, and that he would love her for the rest of his days, meaning that Tracy would not live long. Their children align with this, as their actors also knew about the twist and had to keep it a secret, hence their excitement about Robin and Ted’s union.
Relationships and pedestals
Despite the twist being planned and known to those working on it How I met your mother, it was shocking to fans to say the least. The twist wasn’t the only problem with the series. Despite the epic romances and Ted’s love of love, the show wasn’t flawless. Robin and Ted were occasionally in love and grazed between romances. Ted would meet someone, fall head over heels, then he would share a sweet, soulful moment with Robin and Spiral.
Conversely, Robin would be jealous of Ted’s girlfriends, but eventually grew out of them and had some serious relationships with other men. The problem with the love storylines was that Ted kept going back to Robin because he put her on a pedestal. If Paired life explains, idealizing people involves seeing them as above us. Ted’s idealization of Robin meant that he compared every woman he loved, including Tracy, to Robin.
Rush hour
Between the series’ shocking finale and Ted’s obsession with Robin, How I met your mother was practically irreparable. While the love stories were for the books, much of the humor was embarrassing or creepy. While Ted was the stereotypical “nice guy,” he also forced the women he liked into relationships or dates. The series had a lot of good with the bad throughout its seasons, including the last season rush job. The ninth season focuses on Robin and Barney’s wedding day and the few days leading up to the big day. During the final season, a road trip ensues, Ted and Tracy’s whole relationship is sparked, and Marshall and Lily have a major bump in their relationship. Since most of the final season is focused on the wedding, Ted and Tracy’s relationship is like a footnote. For every story Ted told, seeing the ins and outs of his relationship with Tracy, the mother of his children, took more time than was given.
