2023 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Comedy Series

“Wednesday” (Netflix)

Weekly Commentary: ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” would seem to be one of the frontrunners heading into the early days of the Emmy season, if not the one to beat. Having an amazing second season and coming off of her historic wins last year for Outstanding Comedy Writing and Supporting Actress in a Comedy for Sheryl Lee Ralph, maybe it’s them to lose.

“The Bear” is the new show on the block, winning frontrunners and key guilds, primarily for its lead actor Jeremy Allen White. Still, it poses a serious threat as it brings FX its first win in this category after seven former bids.

For two years in a row, the TV Academy has honored the charms of Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso,” which may or may not be in its final season, depending on who you ask in Hollywood business. ABC’s “Modern Family” is the latest series up for grabs for its first three seasons, which eventually continued until that show’s fifth season in 2014.

Other nominees returning from last year’s ceremony include HBO’s ‘Barry’ and Amazon Prime Video’s ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’, both of which are in their final seasons and could garner support for a farewell.

Several freshman contestants are also getting a big boost from the streaming giants and could make a game for TV Academy’s sake. Netflix has three options with “Beef”, “Mo” and “Wednesday”, while Apple will pilot “The Big Door Prize” and “Shrinking”. Peacock has a popular hit with “Poker Face,” while Amazon will try to build buzz for “A League of Their Own.”

Voting for Emmy nominations takes place June 15-26. Primetime Emmy nominations will be announced on July 12. Check back every Thursday for the latest updates.
