shamshera has finally been released on the big screen and the good news, no, the good news is it more than lives up to its high expectations as an archetypal big screen masala entertainer – the kind that bollywood used with a bizarrely successful propensity over the years ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s and to some extent in the early 2000s, but shamelessly turned his back on the post except for Rohit Shetty. Hopefully Shamshera will bring back those golden days, especially when it comes to dacoit actors, otherwise known as Hindi cinema’s homemade brand of curry westerns, because until the first half, which we just finished, the Karan Malhotra director, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoorindicates exactly that.
Shamshera movie review: Halftime positives of Ranbir Kapoor starrer
Shamshera has every nostalgic legacy you could hope for from the best dacoit movies of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, but writer-director Karan Malhotra and his trio of co-writers don’t just play on nostalgia and imbue the film with plenty of modernity. elements to appeal to viewers of all ages and demographics. Everything from the hero introduction to the revenge theme to dual roles to rescuing your heroine to fulfilling your prophecies comes straight from the pages of Manmohan Desai, Ramesh Sippy, Raj Khosla and Nasir Hussain, but the contemporary touch that given to it, all is Karan Malhotra. Big word also for the cinematography and YRF once again showing their technical finesse in the VFX department. As for Ranbir Kapoor, he totally nails it in his first dual role and Sanjay Dutt is as evil as evil can get, while Vaani Kapoor’s character is limited so far but still quite important to the plot. The rest of the supporting cast like Ronit Roy and Saurabh Shukla are in great shape. The first issue, Fitoor, is also excited to watch on the big screen. The face-off of the interval block between Ranbir and Sanju Baba is another highlight.
Shamshera movie review: Ranbir Kapoor’s half-time negatives starrer
Very little to complain about in Shamshera so far, other than things feel a bit, and just a bit uneven when the plot is set up in the first 10-15 minutes. The first half could also have been trimmed by 8-10 minutes overall. None of the songs other than Fitoor leave a mark, which is fortunately why the brands must have decided not to show the rest in its entirety. Ranbir’s loot could have been worked out a bit more as well.
