Southern films have a great impact on audiences and also cinema, inspiring Hindi filmmakers to remake films for their market. Several movies have been remade for years and very recently in 2023 we have seen Shehzada, Selfie and Bholaa. Another remake added to the list is Gumraah starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Mrunal Thakur. The latest released murder mystery is a remake of the 2019 Tamil film Thadam. The film is inspired by real life murder cases involving two identical twins, which confused and misled investigating officers.
What is it about?
Investigating officer Shivani Mathur played by Mrunal Thakur is assigned to investigate a murder case and to find the murderer she finds a suspect Arjun Sehgal but later learns about the second suspect Sooraj Rana and both of them happen to be identical twins played by Aditya Roy Kapur. As she searches for evidence to learn more about the real killer, she is confused as all the pieces of evidence match both suspects. Things get complicated for her and it’s interesting to see who the real killer is. Gumraah is produced by T-Series and Cine 1 Studios.

What’s hot?
The second half of the murder mystery takes a gripping turn. The investigation begins and the case becomes entangled between evidence of two identical twins. As things fall apart for the investigating officers, it’s fascinating to see how they cope when the evidence matches both suspects. Mrunal Thakur aka Shivani Mathur is stunned to know the truth and till the end the curiosity to know who committed the crime is the only thing that will keep you addicted to the story. The acting of Aditya Roy Kapur playing a dual role will impress you, Mrunal Thakur has done a great performance as an officer, and Ronit Roy, who has always amazed the audience with his acting, continued to do the same with his role in the film. Aditya Roy Kapur played a dual role for the first time, playing the part in two different characters and personalities. He has amazed as an innocent civil engineer and similarly he has amazed in a totally opposite role. Aided by Vardhan Ketkar, the direction is a feast for the eyes and the background score fits the story.
What not?
The first half is very slow, the film starts with a murder, and as you would like to know the ending, the makers have stretched the backstory of the suspects too long. That could have been snapped for a shorter amount of time to make the movie more connected to the audience. While you wait to know the real suspect by the second half, you already predict it.
Pronunciation
With the evolution of OTT, audiences have limited their theater visits and prefer to watch movies in the comfort of their homes. Their taste in content has also changed. Gumraah makes a perfect OTT watch considering its content suitable for digital space. However, if you are an Aditya Roy Kapur or Mrunal Thakur fan, you can watch it once in the cinema because of their acting. However, the film lived up to its title and misled the cops to the very end. Bollywood Life gives the film 2.5 stars.
