Tamil superstar Suriya turns 46 today and couldn’t have hoped for a better birthday present than the national award for his performance at Sudha Kongra’s Soorarai Pottru. Suriya also co-produced the film is a likely candidate for another national award next year for Amazon Prime Videos Jai Bhim.

The triumphant formula for critical and commercial back-to-back success in both films is the same: focus on a social problem while providing clean motivational entertainment.
R Madhavan praised Suriya for his latest achievement and said, “Suriya does work that resonates with the audience. He is also the producer of his recent films. This gives him the freedom to do what he wants, however he wants.”
Ajay Devgan’s National Award for Tanhajichis third national award for best actor after Zakham and the Legend of Bhagat Singh received mixed reactions from fans. Soorarai Pottru Aparna Balamurali also received the well-deserved National Award for Best Actress.
Soorarai Pottru is a biopic with a protagonist who crossed all boundaries to achieve his goal and it seems that the film did the same. Director Sudha Kongara builds an edifying edifice of hope, aspiration, dream, disappointment and eventual victory.
This is a film that hits all the right notes and doesn’t shy away from tropes. Sudha Kongara is very clear in her intentions through the film. This is a real Suriya movie, so it’s designed with all the expected bombast and bragging rights that come with the star. Suriya has the best lines in the movie and scenes in his showdown with aviation mogul Paresh Rawal, whose dubbed voice betrays nothing but pure one-dimensional evil. Rawal links Suriya’s humor to the vagaries of one-man art, except for one key sequence in the sky where Rawal turns a plane over to discourage Suriya saying, “If you own a business class ticket, I own the plane.” Soorarai Pottru is a film that makes the country’s filmmakers break out in a cold sweat, perhaps why the film has achieved what it has just done.
