Why now isn’t a good time to make a Star Wars 10

This year’s Star Wars Celebration was filled with many exciting revelations about what’s happening in a galaxy far, far away. Most impressive was the announcement of three new live-action movies (though not linked together as a trilogy), one of which will be from Academy and Emmy-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, set fifteen years later. the events of The Rise of Skywalker where Daisy Ridley will return as Rey Skywalker, trying to rebuild the Jedi Order. While this new movie – with the unconfirmed title Star Wars: New Jedi Order – is not considered the tenth installment of the Skywalker Saga, it will essentially serve as Star Wars episode 10 in all but name.

No other information about it has been revealed New Jedi Order. Interestingly, despite not being considered an official episode, it’s also not subtitled “A Star Wars Story” like the other spin-offs like Villain One And Solo. Therefore, the status of this movie and what it means for Star Wars is unclear. Despite all this uncertainty New Jedi Order will act like the episode 10 everyone has been wondering about, and right now that’s not good for the franchise. This is why it’s not a good time for a Star Wars 10.

It’s way too early

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has announced the three new Star Wars movies are “pretty advanced” in development, so we’ll probably see them coming soon. New Jedi Order is slated for a 2027 release, but it’s just too early to restart the franchise in movies.

All three of the Skywalker Saga’s Star Wars trilogies had years, even decades, between releases. That time allowed the public to absorb and process an entire trilogy of expansion and its effects on the galaxy. Return of the Jedi left the galaxy in peace and viewers full of hope. Revenge of the Sith left the galaxy in shock and viewers in grief. The Rise of Skywalker left the galaxy in confusion and viewers extremely disappointed, but it was considered the end of the Saga, our last time with beloved characters like Luke and Han. To go straight back to the story less than five years later, even with the significant time jump, makes no sense, especially given the audience’s less than favorable response to The Rise of Skywalker and the fandom’s extremely negative reaction to the Sequel Trilogy as a whole.

Waiting a little longer, say ten years, would be better before considering a return to a galaxy far, far away. Although Disney, Disney, wouldn’t want to wait that long. The day Disney acquired Lucasfilm, the Sequel Trilogy was announced and came just a few years later. But more time would allow fans to make peace with the recent failures and give Disney more time to make a movie that would please everyone and do credit to the franchise.

Fans are tired

Rey coming back to build a new New Jedi Order (after Kylo Ren destroyed Luke Skywalker’s) is exciting, but not enough. When Disney announced the Sequel Trilogy in 2012, Star Wars fans and haters were thrilled to know that a new era of Star Wars was upon us. The last time fans saw Star Wars on the big screen was in 2005 Revenge of the Sithand there was nothing but George Lucas’ little animated pet project, the clone wars, for fans to watch. When the teaser trailer of The power awakens hit, it broke the internet. Everyone was hungry for Star Wars.

In 2023, we’re so full of Star Wars that we’ve had enough. Franchise fatigue has hit Disney hard as both Star Wars and Marvel struggle to keep fans interested following the end of the Skywalker Saga and the Infinity Saga. For Star Wars, it’s worse. There’s never been a clear end goal, and the Sequel Trilogy proved there never was one – besides making the bottom line as high as possible, which meant making as many Star Wars as possible. So five movies and seven shows later in the last seven years, and many more to come within months, fans have had enough. The announcement of the three new movies hasn’t had nearly the same energy as Disney’s original announcement of new Star Wars movies. Most fans don’t expect much from the new ones after the old ones were mixed at best, and many move on. The Mandalorian is a testament to this, as it used to be the most famous show in the world, and Baby Yoda was the king of the internet, but now it suffers from the lowest viewership of any Star Wars show. Like The Mandalorian, Star Wars isn’t a big deal anymore.

Star Wars 10 should happen, but not yet

Just because it’s not the right time for another Star Wars movie doesn’t mean it will never be a good time for Episode 10. The Sequel Trilogy didn’t end the Skywalker Saga on a high note, more like a sad squeak strangled by Disney’s money grab. Disney has tried to fix its mistakes, but that will take time, and bringing Star Wars back to the big screen so quickly is exactly what led to these mistakes in the first place. Disney needs to wait, reflect on its past to see where the franchise stands now, and then move on and get Star Wars back on track. You can’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you are.
