It’s since been clarified that the show wasn’t exactly in jeopardy as it took some time to revamp. Netflix’s Peter Friedlander previously said the delay was due to extensive discussions with the creative team to ensure everyone is on the same wavelength. It was teased that the second season will be very different from the first.

“We wanted to spend the time creatively aligning with what would be the next best experience The Sandmanand that’s why we wanted to pass the time with [showrunner Allan Heinberg] and Neil and really talk through and think hard about what the approach should be — because Season 1 is also very thoughtful and intentional,” Friedlander shared. Variety. “I’m really excited about what we have in store and we’ve made some great decisions about where this will go. So it’s a stay-tuned and watch.”

Gaiman developed the series adaptation with David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg. The series follows Tom Sturridge as Morpheus/Dream, also starring Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Acheampong, Patton Oswalt, David Thewlis, Jenna Coleman, Gwendoline Christie, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park, Mark Hamill and Ferdinand Kingsley. While there was a small but vocal sect of people online who criticized the diverse casting, Gaiman left behind how the show was cast and commented on how that’s how The Sandman has been all along.

“Oh, and every once in a while you get people yelling at us because we made up all these gay characters that weren’t in the comics, and we’d say, ‘Did you read the comics?’ And they said ‘No.’ And we said, ‘They were gay in the comics.’ And they said, ‘You just woke up and no one is going to watch your horrible show.’ And then we went No. 1 in the world for four weeks,” Gaiman said via Other way around.

The first season of The Sandman streams on Netflix. Season 2 does not have a premiere date yet.
