The popular 90s sitcom TGIF Step-by-step famous TV legends Patrick Duffy and Suzanne Somers and ran for seven seasons from 1991 to 1998. Centered on the fusing of two large Wisconsin families and their colorful and headstrong children, the sitcom chronicles the growing pains of the newly merged brood as they work through the many ups and downs of life.
Considered a more modern version of The Brady Gang, the TV show had a large and diverse cast full of talented newcomers who would continue to find success after the impressive run. 9 Patrick Duffy (Frank Lambert)
Dallas soap opera legend Patrick Duffie starred as the family patriarch Frank Lambert, an easy-going entrepreneur who is a successful contractor and passionate Green Bay Packers fan. Frank and Carol have a whirlwind romance and eventually marry in Jamaica, effectively blending their large family while dealing with the many growing pains that come with it.
Duffy directed several episodes of Step-by-step and went on to reprise his role as Bobby Ewing in several projects, including two reunion TV movies in 1996 and 1998 and the 2012 revival, while also appearing in shows like Family Man, Station 19, And NCIS. The seasoned actor last played the role of Stephen Logan The bald and the handsome, a role he held from 2006 to 2022.
8 Suzanne Somers (Carol Foster-Lambert)
TV icon from the 1970s Susan Somers rocketed to fame as Chrissy Snow on Three’s company and found continued success when she portrayed kind-hearted, widowed beautician Carol Foster. Her character falls head over heels for Frank Lambert and ends up having another child named Lily with her. In the 1990s, Somers became the famous spokeswoman for the fitness equipment ThighMaster and continued to speak her mind about medical, health and wellness.
Somers largely retired from acting and took on hosting duties for shows such as Candid Camera, Suzanne Somers breaks through, And The Suzanne Somers Show, and also appeared as a contestant on Dancing with the stars. She has written several autobiographies and diet books, and after battling breast cancer, Somers has become outspoken about alternative cancer treatments.
7 Staci Keanan (Dana Foster)
Dana, the eldest of the Foster children, is a studious and smart feminist who is not afraid to express her disdain towards her new family members, regularly trading insults with JT, Cody, and stepfather Frank before eventually softening towards them. Stubborn and outspoken, Dana was played by all seven seasons Staci Keananwho got her TV start on the sitcom My two fathers.
After the series ended in 1998, Keanan eventually stepped away from the acting world to pursue a career as a lawyer. She graduated from Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles and graduated from the bar in 2013, where she currently works as an associate professor of law.
6 Brandon Call (John Thomas “JT” Lambert)
John Thomas “JT”, a live-in slacker and sports enthusiast, is the eldest of the Lambert children and, like his new stepsister Dana, initially does not react well to the merging of their families. Brandon call previously appeared on shows like Baywatch, Magnum P.I., And St Elsewhere before taking on the role of troublemaker JT Step-by-step.
In 1996, after filming an episode of the sitcom, Call was involved in a violent traffic altercation that resulted in the star being shot in both arms during an altercation. He went on to make a full recovery. After the show ended, Call officially retired from acting and lives a life away from the spotlight, with little known about his current profession.
5 Angela Watson (Karen Foster)
The vain and idiotic Karen is an aspiring model who loves country music, and although she often appeared shallow, she nevertheless had a heart of gold. Angela Watson won audiences throughout the series as Karen and had started her career doing commercials for major brands such as McDonald’s and Doritos before landing a role in the short-lived series Davis Rules.
After managing to escape an isolating and abusive relationship with a production manager and suing her parents for spending her earnings, Watson founded the CAST (Child Actors Supporting Themselves) organization, which provides financial support to child stars.
4 Christine Lakin (Alicia “Al” Lambert)
Tomboyish girl-next-door Alicia “Al” is Frank Lambert’s only daughter and initially has trouble adjusting to her new step-siblings. Christine Laken portrayed Al throughout all seven seasons, and while many of her co-co-stars stepped back after the sitcom ended, Lakin never lost steam.
She went on to appear in multiple film and television roles, including the voice of Joyce Kinney Family manas well as in shows like Hollywood Darlings, Station 19And The rookie and movies like The leisure class and most recently that of 2022 Youtopia. Lankin has also showcased her skills as a director through episodes of TV shows such as The Goldbergs, Schooled, And High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.
3 Christopher Castile (Mark Foster)
Nerdy and sweet, science-loving academic overachiever Mark is the youngest of the Foster children until the birth of Frank and Carol’s daughter Lily. Mark was memorably played by Christopher Castilewho already had success as Ted Newton in ’90s family comedies Beethoven And Beethoven’s 2nd.
Like some of his co-stars, Castile retired from acting in 1998 when the sitcom ended and received his master’s degree. He is currently a professor at Biola University in California and also teaches at Downey High School as a history teacher, with Castile craftily calling the course Step By Step.
2 Josh ByrneBrendan Lambert
Josh Byrne appeared as the loving and carefree youngest Brendan van Lambert for six seasons, with the character being one of the few children to actually hug his new relatives. By means of Step-by-step run, Brendan was mentioned less and less before he was completely written out of the series for the final season, though his character continued to be referenced by the remaining cast members.
Byrne started his acting career with roles in shows like Who is the boss And The family man, but since his departure from the sitcom and Hollywood in 1997, his whereabouts and career choice are largely unknown. According to Christine Lakin, Byrne was written out because his role was considered minor and because new characters were introduced.
1 Sasha Mitchell (Cody Lambert)
Despite being introduced as the Lamberts’ dim-witted, flippant surfer cousin, Cody is a likeable, funny character who quickly warmed to the Fosters and kept viewers laughing throughout his appearances on the sitcom. With his valley accent and crew cut, Cody easily stood out from the other cast members and stayed for the first five seasons after appearing as a guest in the first.
In the 90s, Sasha Mitchell starred as fighter David Sloane in three of the Kickboxer movies, but experienced some personal problems after getting into a fight with his wife in 1996. His character Cody was subsequently written out after Season 5, but returned for a guest appearance in Season 7. Mitchell has gone on to appear in TV shows such as NYPD blue And ER and currently owns a successful welding business.
