District 9 director Neil Blomkamp reunited with aliens in They found usan alien abduction thriller directed by the filmmaker and starring The suicide squad actor Joel Kinnaman plays the lead role. According to a report by deadline, They found us comes courtesy of AGC Studios and will see Blomkamp return to the sci-fi genre alongside the studio following the release of the 2021 sci-fi horror movie, Demonic.

Based on an original screenplay by Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater, They found us sounds like the perfect vehicle for Neill Blomkamp to drive and finds Kinnaman starring as a father who, along with his daughter, goes on a camping trip in the Utah wilderness to mend their broken relationship. Suddenly, they are attacked by a hostile alien life form, putting their lives, not just their relationship, on the line. “We are excited to expand our relationship with Neill, who is a master of the sci-fi and horror genres,” said Stuart Ford, Chairman and CEO of AGC Studios. “Jeremy Slater’s learned terrifying screenplay is a perfect match for Neill’s visual talents and the proven crowd-pleasing instincts of our partners at Temple Hill.”

Producer Wyck Godfrey adds, “The otherworldly horror and breathless suspense at the center of Jeremy’s script is just the backdrop for an all too relatable and emotional tale of a father and teenage daughter grappling with their differences and coming to terms with their estrangement.”

Godfrey will produce They found us along with Marty Bowen for Temple Hill Entertainment, and the film will begin shooting in Australia later this year.

While Neill Blomkamp’s return and alien reunion is a welcome one, many will be wondering when we’ll see the highly anticipated sequel to his critically acclaimed 2009 sci-fi outing. District 9. Currently known as District 10fans of District 9 has been waiting for more than a decade now for the follow-up, which will be taken up with bureaucrat Wikus van der Merwe. Whoever was a little transformed came to the end of the first outing.

Fortunately, both Blomkamp and recurring star Sharlto Copley are now working on the cast District 10 to screens. “Yeah, man, we’ve been working. I made a design, I sent it back to him. He made a design,” Copley revealed last year. “It’s just exhausting trying to find the right kind of story. There were socio-political things going on that he [director Neill Blomkamp] may have felt timing wise that he didn’t want to go right away. So maybe in a year, a year and a half [we’ll begin filming]. He wants to have something to say.”

Since then, however, Copley has cooled his jets a bit, saying it could be a few more years before we see the return of Wikus and Christopher Johnson. “He just wants to time it right. So it looks like it’s going to take another two years,” the actor said in August. “But you know, what’s another two years if it’s been, what, 12? So hopefully we’re shooting in two years. Let’s see.” So we’ll have to keep our patience and be thankful that Blomkamp is coming back with more stories about aliens in They found us.

Neill Blomkamp will then direct the adaptation of Gran Turismowhich will be released on August 11, 2023 by Sony Pictures Releasing.
