Tony 2023 Predictions:
Best Revival of a Musical

Weekly Commentary: Annual reminders! staged concert-reading series, produced annually by the City Center in Manhattan, is no stranger to Broadway success: after all, that’s where the current “Chicago” – now the longest-running show off Broadway – started.

This season, Encores! spawned two serious contenders that are sure to score nominations: “Into the Woods,” in a hearty staging of Sondheim’s favorite with a cast stacked with Broadway names, and “Parade,” bringing the well-received musical to life. seen from Jason Robert Brown in an enlightening new version with a solid cast led by Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond.

Both shows feature large, lush orchestras — and so does ‘Sweeney Todd,’ which brings back Sondheim’s awfully beloved penny with a particularly beefy band of musicians and a powerful vocal ensemble led by Josh Groban and Annaleigh. Ashford.

The latest staging of “Camelot,” featuring a new book by Aaron Sorkin, was less well received overall, but it’s impeccably laid out and beautifully played by another full-scale orchestra. It looks set to oust the other eligible titles in this category, “1776” and “Dancin'”, neither of which were universally adored.

And the expected nominees are:

  1. In the woods(Théâtre Saint-James)
  2. Parade(Bernard B. Jacobs Theater)
  3. Sweeney Todd(Lunt-Fontanne Theater)
  4. Camelot(Vivian Beaumont Theater – Lincoln Center Theater)

Next in line

  1. 1776(American Airlines Theater)
  2. Dance of Bob Fosse(Music Box Theater)

All eligible shows (unrated)
