Hollywood Writers Begin Strike by Call for Reason

Patrick Somerville, creator of the HBO series “Station Eleven” and the Netflix show “Maniac,” was among Hollywood writers who weighed in late Monday after the Writers Guild of America went on strike, saying union talks were in jeopardy. The points stand firm. With reason – and the studios knew it.

“We’re going to do it because our union is strong enough to do it,” said Somerville, who changed his Twitter ID to “Strikerick Somerville” in an apparent authorial flourish. “Asking is level-headed, and even they know we’re right. Collective action is the one place they can’t win.”

The WGA said it was going on strike at the stroke of midnight ET after talks with the studios failed before the expiration of their collective bargaining agreement on Monday night. And it was evident in the response online from many WGA members.

On “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee,” Emmy Award-winning writer Ashley Nicole Black was emotional, reflecting on fears for the future while expressing confidence in the strike move.

Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow” producer Philip Iscove provided more detail on a possible sticking point in the talks.
