What’s hot?

It is a very sensitive subject that must be handled with care. Director Sudipto Sen is right. The heart is in the right place and the film knows how to evoke the feeling of trauma and fear that makes you bond with the characters. Adah Sharma certainly shined brightest in the film. You can easily say that this is one of the best performances of her career to date. She takes on the role of Shalini and leaves behind a moving performance. From her Malayali accent to sticking to her character’s innocence – Adah Sharma nailed it. The other girls do their best to support the film with their decent acting talents. The movie will keep you hooked from the start with some traumatic scenes that will leave you gasping. The film contains quite a few touching scenes that will be remembered for days.

What not?

Some scenes are quite gory and it can be hard to just sit and watch. While the subject matter was handled with sensitivity in most scenes, some of the dialogue was far-fetched to ever be said by a human being. The background score of the film seems to be out of sync with the film’s theme as it does not fit the mood of The Kerala Story very well. Although the film is claimed to be based on true events, it does not depict the timeline of the occurrence of these events and blurs the line between reality and fiction.

BL verdict

The Kerala Story is not for the faint hearted. The film deals with a very complex subject and it should be noted that it can be very disturbing for many. It is a challenging film if you watch it without prejudice.

Judgement : 2.5 out 5
