James Gunn says Guardians of the Galaxy cast members will be in Superman: Legacy

While James Gunn says goodbye to Marvel Studios and the Guardians of the Universe with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, that doesn’t mean he won’t see the same cast members. At least one of the Guardians of the Universe team will be part of the filmmaker’s next big film project, Superman: Legacy. While answering some questions from fans on Twitter, Gunn responded to one person who bluntly asked if “a cast member for [Guardians of the Galaxy]would be part of the Superman: Legacy form. His answer made it clear that this would happen.

“Yes,” Gunn answered bluntly.

Of course, the short answer will leave us wondering which cast member(s) Gunn might be referring to, but it sounds like it’s certain that it may have already been sorted out with the person or persons he has in mind. It clearly doesn’t seem likely that any of the cast members will play Clark Kent, as Gunn has said he’s looking for someone significantly younger than Henry Cavill for the part. But there are certainly many other roles in that world that would suit the Guardians of the Universe team, and it seems worth noting that Dave Bautista campaigned for the role of Lex Luthor.

“As soon as I saw that picture of myself next to Lex Luthor, I was like, ‘Man, that’s really interesting,'” Bautista told ComicBook.com, referring to a social media post of himself next to the supervillain. ‘It’s interesting to me. I’d be all set for that, James Gunn.’

We’ll have to wait and see what happens to it Superman: Legacy, but this is just the beginning of a new era with the DCU. Meanwhile, Gunn ends another era with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The movie marks his last Marvel Studios film, given that Gunn will focus on fleshing out his DCU with Peter Safran going forward. It was emotional for Gunn to say goodbye to the Guardians of the Universe characters, though he also says he wouldn’t mind if they continued in the MCU without him.

“It would definitely not be disloyal to me for them to continue in the Marvel Universe,” Gunn recently told Empire. “I’d like to see all the characters that remain [at the end of the film] get solo movies, or join the Avengers, or a new version of the Guardians, or whatever.”

Still, Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana have already said they’re done with those next roles Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But Chris Pratt has also teased that he’d be ready to return as Star-Lord in the MCU’s future.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now running in cinemas while Superman: Legacy will hit the big screen on July 11, 2025.
