2023 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Talk Series

Weekly Commentary: The lingering issues between the debate series and the scripted variety continue to show. With “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” dropped out of that category and “The Problem with Jon Stewart” added to it, much to the chagrin of both HBO and Apple.

This TV Academy position has now presented a potential landscape for outstanding talk shows where, according to our tracking, only 14 shows are vying for attention. Two women are part of the white male landscape (and Trevor Noah who left “The Daily Show”). This is the price we pay when you cancel Samantha Bee and have no kickass women on the late night landscape (networks please address).

Although “The Amber Ruffin Show” has the DNA of a talk show, in recent years it has been among the scripted variety submissions. However, Peacock successfully applied for a move into the debate series category where she hopes to make history as the first black woman to be nominated for her brief six-episode season.

The other could be the little-known “The Sisaundra Show” which was submitted last year and meets the eligibility criteria.

Fourteen submissions will yield four nominees based on the Emmy rules.

The answer? Combine them again until you have a landscape that justifies a large enough field.

Voting for Emmy nominations takes place June 15-26. Primetime Emmy nominations will be announced on July 12. Check back every Thursday for the latest updates. All information is preliminary and subject to change.

And the expected nominees are:
