The Peabody Awards won’t be hosting a comeback celebration this year after all. The organization scrapped this year’s event, which would have been the first in-person Peabody ceremony since 2019 (pre-pandemic), following the writers’ strike. Originally scheduled to be held on Sunday, June 11 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, this would also have been the first Peabody Awards to be held in Southern California.
“As an organization dedicated to honoring the most compelling and thought-provoking stories in broadcast and streaming media, we recognize and respect the position many of this year’s Peabody Award winners find themselves in,” said the organization said in a statement. “Due to the continued uncertainty and significant challenges that exist across the industry, we have decided to cancel the 83rd Annual Peabody Awards which was scheduled to take place on June 11 in Los Angeles. The cancellation of the ceremony is extremely disappointing as this year’s 39 winners are extremely talented and have told powerful stories that deserve to be celebrated.
The Peabody Awards jury had already announced this year’s winners, including ten entertainment programs: “Abbott Elementary”, “Andor”, “Atlanta”, “Bad Sisters”, “Better Call Saul”, “Los Espookys”, ” Mo, “Pachinko”, “Separation” and “We are here”.
Chosen by a unanimous vote of 32 jurors from more than 1,400 nominations, the 83rd Annual Peabody Awards also landed eight documentaries, seven news programs, five interactive and immersive content, three podcast/radio programs and one each of the fares. arts and public service.
Previously announced specialty awards set to be presented at this year’s event included NBC News’ “Today” as the Institutional Award winner; Lily Tomlin was named the recipient of this year’s Peabody Career Achievement Award; Issa Rae won the Peabody Trailblazer Award; and Shari Frilot was named the winner of the Visionary Award. Bob Bain Productions had been asked to produce the event.

The Peabody Awards are chosen annually by a jury in the categories Entertainment, Documentary, News, Podcast/Radio, Arts, Children & Youth, Immersive & Interactive Media, and Public Service Programming. Based at the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Peabodys examine “stories that powerfully reflect the pressing social issues and vibrant emerging voices of our time.”
