A Very Thursday night’s “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 19 two-part finale wraps up the return of Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Maggie (Kelly McCreery), the Katherine Fox Awards in Boston, and Simone’s (Alexis Floyd) wedding. contains other ideas. Trey (William Martinez)… while she was walking down the aisle.
Here’s a rundown of the most shocking moments from the finale of the ABC drama, which promised a possible happy ending for some, and left us in suspense about the fate of more than a few characters.
9. Bailey Wins The Katherine Fox Award
Despite not being nominated, Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) was the surprise recipient of the Katherine Fox Award for her work in teaching doctors how to perform life-saving reproductive care, at a time when abortion has been outlawed in many states. She “ugly cried” on the podium as everyone gave her a standing ovation.
8. Meredith and Nick get their “happily ever after”
More than “shocking” Nick (SCOTT SPEEDMAN) and Meredith “finally” make their relationship official for good after they head to Boston for the awards. After a few awkward scenes in which he incorrectly guessed that Meredith had a new boyfriend (he was actually Zola’s tutor – and gay), he finally explained his non-reaction to her declaration of love. “I was exhausted, scared and overwhelmed.”
Emboldened by the realization that she had not moved on, he told her, “I want to live a life with love and mess and pain…and you.” She replied, “Okay, okay, then,” leading to a kiss and a fadeout on the happy couple. It looks like there might be an open spot for another hunky doctor at Gray Sloan.
7. Winston and Maggie hook up – but talk about divorce
Winston (Anthony Hill) had a great day when Teddy (Kim Raver) told him she was promoted to head of cardio at Gray Sloan, while he was on his way to Boston for the Kathryn Fox Awards. At the hotel, he met estranged wife Maggie (Grey Sloan’s former head of cardio) and helped her fix her dress before the event. The two end up in bed and seem well on their way to reconciliation, until he tells her he wants to focus on his career. “Should we get divorced?” He asked Magee, who said that decision could wait.
6. Benson intubates elderly DNR patent Maxine against her will and Jules is furious
Benson Quan (Harry Shum Jr.) has grown very fond of 81-year-old patient Maxine (Juliet Mills), so he ignores her instructions not to do resuscitation or intubation when she suddenly stops breathing. Jules (Adelaide Kane) was furious, especially when she realized that Maxine had named her as medical proxy. She told Benson, “Do you know what position you put me in? I may have to decide to unplug my favorite person in the world. But her gamble paid off in the form of Maxine, who died of a punctured lung. Suffered, he regains consciousness and is expected to recover. Jules tells him that he was “the most selfish, impulsive, cocky, angry person” she had ever met, but because he saved Maxine’s life , “I don’t even get a chance to hate you. I want to love you too
5. Richard (probably) fell off the wagon
When Catherine’s (Debbie Allen) private jet encounters severe turbulence on a flight to Boston, Richard (James Pickens Jr.) grabs her martini. Before he can take a sip, Bailey slaps him with his hand. But later that night, after the awards ceremony, Richard tells Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) that he was tempted to drink again. He invited her to come to an AA meeting with him, but she insisted that she would have to wait for Katherine. Moments after Amelia leaves, a waitress delivers the vodka tonic she ordered. He hesitated and we did not see whether he had consumed alcohol or not.
4. Simone leaves the tray at the altar and things spiral from there
Simone going cold about marrying Trey really wasn’t a big shock, and neither was her going to the hospital in her wedding gown to profess her love for Lucas (Nico Terro). The pair have sex and both return to work. But then Lucas’s next patient turns out to be none other than Trey, who crashes his car while trying to follow Simone. Despite having a broken arm, Trey was still able to punch Lucas in the face in order to take Simone away from him.
Trey was ready to give Simone another chance, but she told him that she is not the same person since moving to Seattle. He warned her that Lucas was a “screw-up” and said, “If your life falls apart, I’m not going to pick up the pieces.”
3. Link Tells Jo He Loves Her
Link (Chris Carmack) openly disapproves of the attention he lavishes on handsome, charming patient Sam Sutton (Sam Page), telling her that he is inappropriate. He reminded her that he had slept with an intern, so there was no point in advising her on the ethics of a hospital romance. He later told her that she should move out because their children, whom they are co-parenting as roommates, found the situation “confusing”.
He confessed that he had been in love with her for years and she seemed stunned… until she replied with a smile, “You incredible dummy, I love you too,” and they kissed in the rain.
2. Meredith’s new Alzheimer’s theory means she could lose her research funding – and her career
When her former co-workers arrived in Boston, Meredith was in “mad scientist” mode, as Nick put it: She told them about her radical new theory about the causes of Alzheimer’s, which would shake up the establishment and spur her research. Will put on a completely new one. Way. Richard advised her, “If you make this public, there is a possibility that you may lose your money and your reputation.” Amelia was also upset, telling Meredith, “It disrespects the work of Derek (Patrick Dempsey),” as it went against her late brother’s findings. Later, however, Nick tells her not to listen to him: “Have you really come this far just to play by the rules? Because that would only make me angrier. At the awards dinner, Meredith frowns and tells a wealthy investor that she intends to go in an entirely new direction with her research.
1. Teddy collapses and stops breathing
Teddy’s fate is up in the air after she collapses on the OR floor as she prepares to operate on Sam. For the past two hours, she had been complaining of a bad toothache, but Gray Sloan was already short on staff, so she refused to go to the dentist. Longtime “Grey’s” fans probably weren’t entirely surprised that this seemingly minor concern would become life-threatening, but not as Owen (Kevin McKidd) failed to respond to a defibrillation shock after rendering him unresponsive. It was still terrifying to watch.
Teddy’s own medical emergency meant there was no surgeon to operate on Sam, who had an aortic aneurysm and was bleeding. Despite being told to wait for an attending physician, Lucas makes the first cut to try to save Sam’s life. The episode ends with Teddy lying lifeless on the floor next to a growing pool of Sam’s blood.
“Grey’s Anatomy” has already been renewed for season 20 on ABC.
