The Kerala Story was released on 5 May 2023 and has sparked several controversies and protests that have defamed the film. Despite all the objections, the film has earned Rs 171 crore at the domestic box office. People have claimed that the movie created a perception about a certain religion. Also, there have been many clashes between communities across the country after the movie was released in theaters. About the same time we had a conversation with Yogita Bihani, who plays a leading role in the film, and she thinks that this is not against religion or community again, but against terrorism.
Although the film is a success at the box office, there are many controversies surrounding it. People claim that the movie is an attack on a certain community and religion. In fact, the people asking for history or facts about the movie argued that it should be banned. There are many riots and many clashes between communities and our country after the film started showing. But when we talked to Yogita Bihani about the scene, here’s what she has to say. She has a strong and clear message to the audience that will see the film and may be negatively influenced by a certain top or religion.
What is your message to the public who might be influenced against a particular religion or community after seeing the film?
Look, I’m playing a Christian. There are two other girls who played Hindu and there were other girls in the movie who were Muslim and they were in the organization of ISIS. So this can happen to anyone, Hindu, Muslim, Christian or Sikh, because terrorism has no religion. They want suicide bombers and sex slaves.
She continued her point, saying, “They can convert anyone and for them it’s like serving god, their ideology is different from ours. They’re anti-human, they don’t care about religion, and all they want is girls. They are terrorists and they have no religion, they don’t even save and convert children and boys, not just girls.” According to her, this is a national threat “because when people eventually join this army, these suicide bombers will only come and kill us.”
About the Kerala story
The Kerala Story revolves around the story of a group of women from Kerala who converted their religion to Islam and joined the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The film stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Vijay Krishna Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani. The film is directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Shah under the banner of Sunshine Productions. The film was released in theaters on May 5, 2023.
