A strong movie catalog and original series like “Yellowjackets,” along with closely matched audiences, should make the cable network’s library an easy sell for streaming subscribers.
A wave of consolidation is hitting the streaming industry. Warner Bros. Discovery recently brought a bulk of Discovery+ content along with the listing of HBO Max on the newly named Max service. Disney announced that it will be rolling out Hulu content to a unified Disney+ streaming app later this year. And Paramount said that the combination of Paramount+ and Showtime will become a reality next month.
As Showtime prepares to go away as a standalone streaming option in June, we looked at the most sought-after shows and movies available on the service, according to data from Parrot Analytics, which focuses on consumer research, streaming, downloads and social media. Keeps in media, among other engagements. This gave us a sense of what content would be most valuable to entice customers to sign up for Paramount+ with the Showtime tier and prove the value of this bundle to customers.
From Showtime’s movie catalog, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was the most sought-after release in April so far. This was 50 times the average movie demand for the month, which puts it far ahead of any other movie on Showtime. The film is still riding high from its awards season dominance earlier this year. In addition, other A24 movies such as “Midsomer” and “Uncut James” are among the top 10 most sought after movies available on Showtime.
“Yellowjacket” is currently the most sought-after Showtime series. It has a wide lead over other Showtime series, with demand for the series averaging nearly 43 times in April. The show ended its second season on Friday, garnering more viewers than the first season, which was a success. Of the 10 most sought-after Showtime series, only “Billions” and “Yellowjackets” have ordered upcoming seasons. This points to a potential weakness of the Showtime catalog – a lack of in-demand current series.
A positive indicator for Paramount’s plans to roll these two services together is the similarity of their audiences. Original series from both Paramount+ and Showtime attract largely similar audiences, older and more evenly split between men and women. This makes Paramount+ a natural home for Showtime as it ends its run as a standalone service. And plans to bring some Paramount+ shows For the Showtime TV network, this means that these streaming originals will find a receptive audience in the network’s linear audience.
